Position Overview American University Preparatory School aspires to grow into a leading college preparatory boarding school for international and domestic high school students in the future. The college counselor will report to the Senior Administrative Team and work collaboratively with faculty and staff and be a strong team player. The candidate will also work closely with our students and their families by guiding them through the path to postsecondary opportunities.
Manage the college-counseling program while improving the college counseling program every year.
Educate and communicate with stakeholders (students, parents, faculty, staff, and educators) on the college admissions process.
Guide and advise students beginning in 9th grade with the introductory workshops as well as teach two college counseling courses and advise 11th and 12th grade students through the college application process.
Meet with 11-12th grade students to map out a plan for academic course selection and registration, extra-curricular activities, summer plans and college admissions. Be available to answers questions on summer plans for 9th and 10th grade students.
Monitor and provide academic advising to all eleventh and twelfth grade students to keep them on track for college enrollment.
Encourage students to attend college fairs, visits, and college related programs.
Teach college-counseling workshops (e.g. college admissions, financial aid, and/or interviewing) throughout the year.
Write letters of recommendation and advocate on behalf of students when communicating with college representatives.
Act as AUP’s test coordinator and assist with registrar responsibilities.
Represent AUP at outside at national events. Build and manage relationships with outside partner organizations like College Board, Naviance, NACAC, WACAC, and OACAC.
Attend college admissions conferences to keep abreast of the industry.
Maintain and create relationships with college admission representatives to increase school’s visibility and better assist students during application process.
Work with Admissions and Marketing team to create AUP school profile and possible content for marketing purposes.
Proficiency in MS Office, Google Drive, Docs, and Spreadsheets. Working knowledge of Naviance and Renweb.
Ideal candidate should have experience with college admissions and/or college counseling.
Experience with international college counseling a plus
