SOLA, a unique boarding school for girls located in Afghanistan, seeks a US-based Director of Finance and Operations to be directly responsible for all financial functions and reporting as well as management of facilities, human resources, and related functions. A member of the school’s senior administrative team, the Director of Finance and Operations reports to the vice-president, and works closely with the president and senior administrative staff in both the US and Kabul.
The Director of Finance and Operations will be responsible for developing and leading an internal team that manages finance, planning, accounting and budgeting, human resources, administration facilities and IT. The Director of Finance and Operations will also participate actively in long-term strategic planning.
Work with the president and board of trustees to develop and implement financial and operational strategies to support the school’s near-term requirements and long-term strategic plan.
Guide the school in executing its strategic plan and capital campaign, including financial planning and modeling in support of campus expansion, construction projects, and enrollment growth.
Review, modify, and implement financial management policies and controls to ensure complete financial integrity.
Direct the development and management of an annual operating budget as well as oversight of cash management and financial controls.
Report financial results to senior staff and to the board in an accurate and timely manner.
Track and compile financial information needed for donor and grant reporting.
Oversee banking relationships in the US and in Kabul to support operations.
Manage investment of capital as needed, including the school’s future endowment.
Assess liability issues and oversee risk management and mitigation.
Coordinate the annual audit with outside auditors
Oversee all aspects of facilities management including maintenance and security.
Implement robust contracts management and reporting system.
Oversee human resource administration including compensation and benefits policies and performance review tracking.
Build and maintain information technology capabilities to meet school needs now and in the future.
Train staff in the US and in Kabul on policies, procedures and the use of key tools such as QuickBooks.
Ensure that all licensing and public reporting requirements are met.
Perform other duties as assigned by the vice-president
5-10 years of progressive financial and operations management and business leadership experience.
Three or more years’ experience in finance/operations administration in an independent school or a non-profit organization strongly preferred, but candidates with for-profit experience may also be considered.
Regular travel to Kabul, Afghanistan (quarterly) is required.
A team player with excellent judgement willing to embrace SOLA’s mission in the spirit of problem solving, delegation and congenial supervision.
Familiarity with financing, human resources, maintenance, IT, security, financial audits, and day-to-day business operations.
Solid analytical and problems solving skills with the ability to connect financial data with business decisions.
Attention to detail within larger strategic goals.
Fluency in financial management software.
Ability to work collaboratively with a management team.
Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, including the ability to work with Board committees.
Willingness to travel to Kabul periodically.
Excellent communication and relationship-building skills with an ability to prioritize, negotiate and work with a variety of internal and external stakeholders
