ORGANIZATION SUMMARY: Oliver Scholars is a nonprofit organization committed to preparing high-achieving, low-income, students of color for success at top independent schools and colleges. For over 30 years, Oliver has enabled students to attend the nation's top secondary schools and preeminent institutions of higher learning. Oliver Scholars seeks an experienced Director of College Counseling.
POSITION SUMMARY & REPORTING: Annually, approximately 75% of Oliver Scholars matriculate at Top 50 higher education institutions. With that in mind, the Director of College Counseling should have a deep understanding of, and experience with, the college admissions process to competitive higher education institutions across the US. S/he will work as part of a dynamic team, and as such, should have an engaging personality and have a track record of forging strong relationships with stakeholders. S/he must have a strong sense of purpose and passion for creating access for under-served students. The Director will be proactive and capable of thinking strategically, be detail-oriented, have strong follow-through skills, be able to prioritize multiple assignments, and handle complex tasks in a fast-paced environment. The Director will report to the VP of Programs and Operations
Lead the development of a college access curriculum for students applying to top-tier schools and who will need full financial aid.
Maintain outreach and relationships with college representatives and facilitate meetings between them and Oliver students.
Work closely with college counselors at our partner independent schools, share data and resources, and maintain common practices.
Meet with sophomores, juniors and seniors, individually and in groups over 2-3 years, providing suggested college lists that reflect an appropriate range of choices, keeping them on track as they apply, seek financial aid and matriculate.
Create and update database with most relevant student data and information. Work with Scholar Services and Database Manager to maintain records on seniors, including high school transcripts, college acceptances, financial aid, etc.
Update and maintain resources regarding colleges, admissions and financial aid/scholarships.
Oversee the development of programming, staffing, and facilitation of events, and logistics during the summer and the school year including - but not limited to:
Financial Aid Workshops (Spring and Fall)
Fall/Spring College Visits
College Tours (2 weeks)
Decision Day Celebration
Transitioning into College Week
SAT/ACT Test Prep Classes
College Seminar Classes for 9-12th grade
College Information Sessions (Fall and Spring)
Freshman Care Packages
Last Minute Help! Workshop
College Interview Help Workshop
College Scholars Holiday Party
Advocate for seniors during the college admissions process.
Write college letter of recommendations for seniors as requested.
Write letters of recommendations for scholarships and fund-based opportunities for seniors as requested.
Compile an annual Organizational Profile, with information about Oliver Scholars.
Prepare quarterly and annual reports related to college admissions and financial aid to internal and external school stakeholders.
Create and oversee Oliver Emergency Funding process and application.
Supervise Assistant Director of College Counseling.
5+ years in college guidance at an independent school or in a college admissions office.
Strong organizational and time management skills related to guiding students and ability to handle multiple tasks.
Familiarity with college admission testing options.
Awareness of the financial aid process and scholarship opportunities.
Commitment to the mission of Oliver Scholars.
The position involves travel, including weekends, to represent Oliver Scholars at regional and national conferences, as well as college visitation programs.
