The Middle School Library Assistant position is a staff position that reports to the Librarian of the Middle School. This position is responsible for supporting users of the Middle School library (grades 6 – 8) and in assisting in the operations of the Middle School Library.
We are seeking an organized and collegial person who is passionate about working with children and books while eager to stay abreast of innovative educational technologies. The right candidate will primarily assist library users in locating and using library print materials and electronic information resources to maximize access to information. The library assistant also creates and updates reference/instructional guides to assist students in retrieving information, particularly for curriculum-based projects, and may be required to teach library computers skills/technology lessons or workshops. The position also requires general supervision of student behavior in the library and management of our circulation desk, including checking out materials, cataloging new materials and coordinating the team of parent volunteers that process and shelve books. Clerical duties may also involve processing billing and overdue notices, semi-annual inventory of the library collection, maintenance and ordering of supplies and other duties as requested.
The ideal candidate possesses a four-year undergraduate degree and previous library experience, s/he has a working knowledge of library software and resources, including databases, strong organizational and communication skills, and Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and Google Docs. This position requires collaboration with the Middle School Librarian as well as classroom teachers and the ideal candidate will be able to build effective working relationships with colleagues, students and parents. The Library Assistant works on school days (Monday-Friday, with the exception of holidays). Work hours must have occasional flexibility needed to accommodate student projects, classroom needs, or other school requirements.
