Georgetown Day School’s Office of Auxiliary Programs seeks instructors for its GDS 360 Extended Day Program Enrichment classes.
GDS Auxiliary Programs Mission: W hile participating in GDS Auxiliary Programs, children will explore, learn, and create through hands-on and interpersonal inquiry, gaining an appreciation for themselves, others, and the world. GDS Auxiliary Programs Team Members teach new skills and provide tools that enable children to develop into great people who strive to learn and understand, try new things, and care for others.
Position Description: GDS 360 Extended Day Program seeks to hire instructors to teach enrichment classes that will challenge our students academically, physically, and artistically. We seek individuals with experience teaching children ages 4–13 as well as professional expertise in such areas as science, math, visual or performing arts, language arts, computer programming, technology and engineering, and more. Classes run for one semester (13–17 classes) for about an 1.25 hours per week and for children in grade increments (PK–K, 1st–2nd, 3rd-5th, 6th-8th).
Instructors must be enthusiastic and knowledgeable about ways to support learning through guided activities. The ability to provide rich, mission-aligned content and creative pedagogy, to establish authentic relationships, to work collaboratively with colleagues, and to place children’s interests and experiences at the heart of the classroom are essential components of the job. Instructors must also submit a semester-long syllabus and weekly lesson plans. As a diverse, inclusive school devoted to preparing our students to live and work in an increasingly globalized and multicultural society, GDS is particularly interested in professionals with demonstrated interest and experience in working in such a school setting.
This position reports to the GDS 360 Extended Day Program Director.
Seeking instructors for the following enrichment classes:
Odyssey of the Mind
French, Spanish, or Chinese Language and Culture
Cooking and Culture
Computer Programming with Scratch or Scratch Jr.
Reading and Writing Enrichment
Machine Sewing and Fabric Arts
Various Sports (Basketball, Flag Football, Ultimate Frisbee, Soccer)
Middle School Debate
Responsibilities include the following:
? Submit a season syllabus prior to the start of the program
Submit weekly lesson plans that include class objectives and learning goals
Lead classes, ensuring that learning goals are met
Arrive promptly and prepared for class
Supervise snack at the start of each class
Prepare a demonstration of mastery as a culmination to each season
Ensure that students are learning in creative, hands-on, interactive, and age-appropriate ways
? Incorporate opportunities for students to collaborate, problem-solve, create
Provide a weekly write up of the topics and accomplishments in class to send home to families
? Other duties as assigned
Qualifications: The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications:
? Minimum Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional experience in the subject area
Professional experience in the subject area
Prior history of teaching the class to the target age group
Must enjoy working with children and demonstrate good judgement in doing so
Position Status: This is a part-time, stipended position with a desired start date around August 22 for staff training; classes begin in September.
Hours: 3:30pm–4:45pm on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and/or Fridays and/or 2:30–3:45pm and/or 4:00–5:00pm Wednesdays. If you work in other capacities at GDS, those responsibilities must not overlap with this role.
Pay: Ranges from $50-75/ per class depending on role and experience
