Burgundy Farm Country Day School (www.burgundyfarm.org) is a progressive school in Alexandria, Virginia, serving 275 children from age 4 through grade 8. Burgundy believes children learn best in an inclusive, creative, and nurturing environment that engages the whole child. The school’s innovative, hands-on approach to education cultivates independent thinking, promotes academic excellence, instills respect for diversity, and teaches responsibility for self, for others, and for the natural world.
At Burgundy, the mission is strong and clearly evident throughout. The first integrated school in Virginia and a former parent-cooperative school, Burgundy has a historical and deep commitment to diversity, to community, and to collaboration among parents and staff.
The school’s main campus, on a former dairy farm just outside the D.C. Beltway, wonderfully belies its metropolitan proximity. Twenty-six wooded acres with nature trails, farmyard animals, pond, barn, and school buildings integrate with the natural environment to create an inviting pastoral setting and enable numerous hands-on environmental activities. The school also has a mountain campus, the 506-acre Burgundy Center for Wildlife Studies at Cooper’s Cove, West Virginia. Visits to “the Cove” are an integral and treasured part of Burgundy’s curriculum and community.
Burgundy seeks a Director of Advancement who will match the energy, innovation, and enthusiasm of this school community. The Director reports to the Head of School, is a member of the administrative team and serves as the staff liaison for the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees and the Burgundy Parent Association (BPA). Burgundy has a generous community, but historically there has been a clearer expectation for families to give of their time. The incoming Director of Advancement will continue to support developing a stronger culture of philanthropy within the community. While the school has enjoyed substantial campaign fundraising success, a key opportunity for the incumbent advancement director will be continuing efforts to instill a sense of pride and comfort around financial stewardship and sustainable giving throughout the school community.
This is an exciting time to join the Burgundy Farm community. The school is in the process of realizing the campus renewal goals from previous strategic planning and has recently executed a successful campaign for two projects, raising over $4M for a new Arts and Community Center. This project is currently in mid-construction. Plans to construct an adjacent Campus Commons will require a smaller campaign effort. Additionally, a new strategic plan has been adopted, and its goal will include opportunities for targeted fundraising projects.
Thus, the new Director of Advancement will join the school’s leadership team as the school continues its forward momentum and with the great opportunity to build upon a visible, successful campaign effort. The Head of School, and Board, and Advancement Team are eager for a strong school advancement director with successful experience in major fundraising to lead inspire, and manage them in development efforts.
The Director of Advancement will be responsible for the leadership and coordination of all fundraising, major events, and communications. In addition to managing and supporting a staff of three to four, the Director will help coordinate volunteers, who are instrumental in both leadership and support of the school’s advancement efforts. Specifically, the Director of Advancement will:
Coordinate the strategic planning and implementation of all fundraising programs to support the institution
Lead and coordinate the Head of School and Board Development Committee’s advancement strategy and efforts
Develop and implement a plan to increase alumni and parental engagement with and support of the institution
Oversee a coordinated digital and print communications program, and supervise marketing and public relations programs to promote the school

Develop, inspire and lead a professional and volunteer staff to carry out the activities of this office, and
Serve as staff liaison for the Development Committee of the Board of Trustees, as well as parent and alumni groups.
Burgundy Farm’s next Director of Advancement will be an individual with a strong track record as a successful development professional and leader, ideally gained in an educational setting. They will be confident, warm, and approachable, enjoy building meaningful relationships and engaging actively in the life of the school. In addition to the attributes, experiences, and skills noted above, the next Director of Advancement will be an individual who:
