Sandhills School is an independent school in Columbia, South Carolina offering a 1st-12th grade college preparatory curriculum for students with average to superior intelligence who have the learning differences of dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, and ADD/ADHD. Nationally recognized as one of only fourteen schools in the nation accredited by the Academy of Orton-Gillingham Practitioners and Educators (AOGPE) for using the Orton-Gillingham approach, Sandhills School enrolls 94 students. The highly trained faculty of 29 are specialists in the field of learning differences and all hold advanced degrees. 100% of the students who complete the Sandhills curriculum are accepted into the colleges or universities of choice.
With the announcement of the retirement of our highly regarded, long-standing Head of School, we seek an individual interested in continuing the standard of excellence as the premier Orton-Gillingham school in South Carolina and one of the top in the nation. The new leader will begin July 1, 2018.
Established in 1970 by a group of parents, Sandhills provides a comprehensive hands- on, multi-sensory curriculum that includes auditory, tactile and kinesthetic modalities, technology integrated into all learning and domestic and international field experiences. Small class sizes and individualized instruction tailored to each student’s needs help students overcome their difficulties with reading, writing and math and prepare them for college and beyond. The beautiful campus of three buildings including a brand new gymnasium/ arts center sits on 23 acres, featuring a pond and greenhouse. The school is financially strong with an annual budget of 2.2 M and has experienced a controlled and sustained growth for the last 11 years, more than doubling enrollment. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS) and is one of sixteen Orton-Gillingham accredited teacher training centers in the US. It is a member of National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS) the Palmetto Association of Independent Schools, the International Dyslexia Association and the Learning Disabilities Association.
Candidates for the position should have a Masters Degree in Education or a related field and ten years experience in school administration including staff supervision, financial management and curriculum oversight. Preference will be given to candidates with Orton-Gillingham expertise and/or experience.
Applicants must demonstrate a dedication to students who learn differently and the proven ability to continue the collaborative culture of a prominent college preparatory school focused on individualized learning. Applicants will be evaluated on their experience in new student assessment for enrollment, enrollment management, teacher support, team building, student service support, financial management, advancement oversight, board development, and parental guidance in the best practice approaches to support students who learn differently. In addition to leading the internal operation of Sandhills School, successful applicants must be able to represent Sandhills in the community with Guidance Counselors, community leaders and donors and have the expertise to maintain all current accreditations
