Stevens Cooperative School, a twos through 8th grade independent school with campuses in Hoboken and Jersey City, NJ, seeks an artteacher to begin in September 2017. The position is at the Jersey City campus and involves teaching 1st through 8th grade classes. When you walk the halls at Stevens, you will find an abundance of artwork in multiple mediums prominently displayed. The visual arts are connected to so many academic disciplines studied by our students. PreK/K students create wire sculptures inspired by illustrations in Shel Silverstein books they read, while 6th grade students extend the study of the Middle Ages by learning how to authentically craft a work of stained glass. During their time at Stevens, students experiment with a rich array of artistic mediums including 3D printers, painting, drawing, collage, printmaking, papermaking, woodworking, clay arts, fiber arts and the digital arts.
This position reports to the academic team and is a full-time position.
Plans an art education program involving demonstrations, student led discussions, hands-on activities, and direct application of skills consistent with the school’s art curriculum; organizes activities for optimal learning.
Works collaboratively with class teachers to ensure integrated approach to humanities based curriculum.
Leads with the preparation of resource rich lessons and interactive art activities for students.
Monitors student progress and maintains relevant evidence of student learning.
Establishes and maintains student expectations for a productive learning environment during class sessions.
Works collaboratively with Hoboken counterparts to plan and develop curriculum.
Participates in faculty committees and other required duties.
Works effectively with all members of the staff.
Exhibits an outstanding level of teacher support and collaborative spirit.
The ideal candidate
Will have knowledge and experience with the use of a wide range of tools, media and learning environments for teaching, learning and assessing.
Will have an interest in working with elementary and middle school age students.
Will have experience with and knowledge of curriculum development
Will possess a bachelor’s degree in education and/or an art related field (Masters preferred).
