The primary responsibility of Residential Advisors is to ensure there is a feeling of warmth, caring and mutual respect among and between the students and the RAs. In addition, it is vital to account for the students’ whereabouts, and to be sure they are safe and fulfilling our expectations of behavior.
Advisors are expected to maintain a common standard of discipline on their floor and should work closely with other RAs, the Dean of Boarding and Dean of Students to ensure that this standard is consistent between floors as well.
Advisors are expected to circulate through their assigned area during duty hours, checking to see that students are engaged in study during study hall, on the floor by curfew, and settled down at the correct time.
Practices, such as having apartment doors wide open when on duty, send a message of availability and approachability. RAs and Prefects are expected to develop activities and customs that make life in the dormitory special. This can be accomplished through bi-weekly dorm meetings, community programming and dorm activities. These activities should be approved and documented in a timely manner using the appropriate forms.
On Duty Hours
Monday through Thursday on duty hours begin at approximately 5:00 p.m. and continue until Morning Assembly at 8:00 a.m. the next morning. RAs are usually responsible for two nights out of these four. Weekend duty hours begin at approximately 4:00 p.m. on Friday and continue until Assembly on Monday morning.
Weekend duty is generally every other weekend and scheduled by semester. Weekend chaperoning and supervision assignments are made at the weekly Weekend Duty Team meeting. Other duties may be assigned throughout the duration of a weekend.
There are several weekends when the entire residential staff is on duty. These weekends include, but are not limited to, the beginning and end of the school year, the beginning and end of each school vacation period, and several three-day weekends. All RAs are expected to take turns chaperoning activities when on duty.
MacDuffie is a small, coeducational, boarding/day, college preparatory school for grades 6 – 12, located in Granby, MA. The school has a very diverse student body. Students represent over 20 countries, as well as a number of local municipalities throughout the Pioneer Valley.
MacDuffie's students compete with their peers on standardized test scores (APs, SATs, ACTs, National Language Exams, etc....), and 100% go to colleges of their choice, including many that are highly selective. About a third of students participate in the arts, and about two thirds in athletics, with some overlap between the groups. The arts programs are highly developed, and every year several students are accepted at prestigious professional schools. Students treat each other and members of the faculty with kindness and consideration, with little delineation between grades or cliques.
Students and faculty have a natural and nurturing relationship, based on mutual respect and interest.
