Riverdale Country School is a preK - 12 day school in New York City that combines both traditional and innovative practices to provide an excellent Liberal Arts learning environment. Through our guiding principles - developing minds, building character and creating community - we aim to shape disciplined and flexible individuals who will change global and local communities for the good.
Riverdale’s Language Department seeks an enthusiastic and collegial teacher of Spanish with native or near-native fluency who can teach a wide range of students at the novice and honors level in both the Middle and Upper School. Likely, the position will include two sections of 7th grade Spanish (the second year of Spanish for most of those students) and two sections of Spanish V, generally composed of 11th grade students. Our curriculum emphasizes developing oral, written, and intercultural competencies. A passion for language learning and world cultures characterizes our ideal candidate. This may be demonstrated through speaking multiple languages or travel abroad.
This position is for a sabbatical replacement for the second semester. The second semester begins in late January, though, if possible, we would have a teacher come a week or two earlier to begin acclimating.
It’s also worth noting that positions such as these often, though not always, can turn into an on-going position, depending on movement within the department as well as enrollment in the Spanish program. Teachers who have the ability to teach additional languages are particularly well-positioned.
All candidates for Riverdale teaching positions should demonstrate an interest in engaging students in an environment that is both supportive and rigorous, and will participate in community activities including advising groups, service opportunities, or other co-curricular activities. Our Middle School and Upper School are located together on the Hill Campus, so candidates who demonstrate enthusiasm for teaching across the divisions are especially attractive. A Bachelor's degree is required; Masters and Doctoral degree holders will receive additional consideration, as will those with prior teaching experience. Riverdale is an Equal Opportunity Employer. Interested and qualified candidates should apply by sending an email to Richard Lapidus, Dean of Faculty, at firstname.lastname@example.org and Language Department Chair, Valerie Keller, at email@example.com.
