DESCRIPTION: While there is not currently a position in Biology available, this is an anticipated opening. St. Paul’s School recognizes the need to attract the most qualified candidates. This individual’s primary responsibility will be to teach classes of biology at the secondary level, and/or, depending on need and qualifications, biology, and some year-long advanced biology electives. Preference will be given to candidates who can teach other subjects within the science disciplines.

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Biology is an introductory class taught to juniors in small classes of twelve to fifteen students. Students will have taken Physics First and Chemistry prior to their experience in the Biology classes. Biology is designed to build on the physics and chemistry knowledge base while developing an inquiring point of view toward living systems in the context of a changing environment. Laboratory experiments heighten and integrate events at the molecular, cellular, and population levels of organization. Specific topics include cell structure and function, biochemical mechanisms, genetics, evolution, systems, and ecology. Scientific thinking and communication are emphasized throughout the course. The St. Paul’s School Science and Mathematics Divisions occupy a new (opened 12/2011) 78,000 square foot state of the art facility.
Education: A Bachelor’s Degree or higher in biology supported by strength in chemistry. A Master’s Degree is preferred with two or more years teaching experience in a Biology curriculum. Lively interest in current pedagogy and scholarship. As part of residential boarding school, the candidate must be interested in working and living with adolescents.
Experience: Comfort in using computer technology and probe systems. Knowledge of current pedagogy and use of basic computer skills.
