Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of about 1,700 students on two campuses -- one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, and the other in Manhattan.
The Ethical Culture Fieldston School is seeking an Assistant Director of the Fieldston Outdoors day camp that operates in July and August each year. This position is responsible for a wide range of supervisory and planning activities.
Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Director of Fieldston Outdoors will work closely with the Director in all aspects of camp leadership and administration. The Assistant Director will have both winter and summer responsibilities including, but not limited to, those responsibilities listed below.
During the winter (January through June) the responsibilities will include recruitment of campers, maintaining social media sites, forming relationships with outside vendors for both field trips and in-camp activities, and creating all organizational paperwork before the start of camp. Specific winter activities include:
Attend weekly meetings with the Director of Fieldston Outdoors to plan for hiring, recruitment of campers, etc.
Attend evening recruiting events on the Fieldston campus
Attend weekend events (on-campus and off-site to camp fairs) to recruit campers
Prepare the Department of Health application
Coordinate field trip reservations
Maintain and expand social media presence
Coordinate with the Facilities, Safety and Security, and Auxiliary Programs departments
Create camp calendar
Create camper permission forms
Manage CampMinder database
Create parent newsletters and recruitment emails
During the summer (June through August) the responsibilities will include staff supervision and training meetings, parent communication, creating weekly group schedules, working closely with the camp nurse to fully grasp all medical concerns and allergies, and serving as an on-call contact for emergencies. Specific summer activities include:
Supervise staff in conjunction with the Director of Fieldston Outdoors
Prioritize camper safety in all aspects of the program, especially food and allergy campers, work with camp nurse to compile camper allergy list, vigilantly be aware of all medical concerns including food allergies and illnesses
Supervise office staff to ensure smooth daily communication and programmatic needs
Be available nights and weekends to field parent questions and concerns
Create weekly schedules for all groups
Create and send weekly parent newsletter
Maintain CampMinder database
Maintain visually appealing camp with nature and art themed decor
Support, train and update counselors during staff meetings three days a week during lunch
Minimum of 3 years of experience with camp program management
Familiarity and enthusiasm for the school’s mission;
Excellent written and verbal communication skills; detail oriented
Ability to anticipate project needs, discern work priorities, and meet deadlines with little supervision
Desire to be part of a team with the capacity to work well individually
Exceptional initiative, work ethic, and self-accountability
Ability to craft strategy, while maintaining an excellent grasp on details
