Job summary: The Director of Financial Aid is responsible for all aspects of the new and rising student financial aid process. This person works closely with the senior school leadership and the Admissions department in determining merit and need based financial aid for new and rising students. Additional responsibilities include assisting and advising families regarding BC High’s policies and practices for assigning financial aid, working with the Advancement Office to assist in the distribution of endowed scholarship money and creating analyses to understand the financial aid trends impacting BC High. This position also works closely with other departments to determine aid that should be offered to students for international trips and for athletic/co-curricular fees.
BC High offers almost $7 million in need and merit based financial aid to more than 700 students annually. Growth of the financial aid program is a key strategic priority of the school in the next 5-10 years.
The Director of Financial Aid works closely with the Manager of Student Billing and Accounts Receivable. These two positions form BC High’s Student Services Center and are responsible for providing excellent service to our students and families in all tuition, billing and financial aid matters.
The Director of Financial Aid is a full-time, twelve-month position and requires a flexible work schedule.
Summary of essential job functions
Responsible for the annual distribution of need based and merit based financial aid for both new and returning students. For new students, the Director of Financial Aid works closely with the Admissions Office to coordinate distribution of aid to the most desired students.
Works with the Advancement Office to assist in the distribution of endowed scholarship money, based on scholarship restrictions and donor intent.
Advises families, both incoming freshmen and existing students, regarding financial aid application requirements and deadlines. Monitors review process for families in special circumstances; and manages financial aid appeals process.
Coordinates and manages BC High’s relationship with the TADS financial aid processing system. Analyzes data reported by TADS to make financial aid decisions.
Prepares reports and analyzes data for review by school senior leadership.
Oversees financial assistance given to students for other costs and fee based programs in the school such as for lunch, work-study, international trips and for athletic/co-curricular fees. Works with faculty and administrators to Identify and provide assistance to those students in need of financial assistance for other school-based costs and programs.
Oversees disbursement of gift cards, prom tickets, mother-son dinner tickets, and father-son event tickets to low income students in connection with the Mother’s Group and Father’s Guild.
Works with numerous departments within the school to identify appropriate students for book awards, internal scholarships, AP exam waivers, college application waivers, and Title I and II eligible students in the BC High population.
Assists academic administration with the management of the School Book Loan program.
Attends various admissions programs, as needed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Skills and Abilities
Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s preferred.
3-5 years of related experience; preferred experience in managing a financial aid process for a large institution.
Knowledge of Excel and Word necessary, ability to become proficient in BC High’s Blackbaud and TADs system platforms.
Ability to work collaboratively to form the student service team with the Manager of Student Billing and Accounts Receivable. These two roles will provide backup to each other.
Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Excellent written, verbal, communication and interpersonal skills.
