Girard College seeks an experienced Science Teacher for grades 6-8 beginning January 2018 and lasting for the remainder of the school year. Our teacher will need to teach scientific content and skills, but also inspire the intellectual curiosity for Science. Work collaboratively with teachers in other disciplines as well as the residential staff responsible for the elementary/middle school students. Participate fully in the college academic and residential community. The Elementary/Middle School faculty must encourage our students to be actively engaged in the learning process, and to live Girard’s Mission and the core values: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Self-Discipline and Compassion. The position reports directly to the Elementary/Middle School Academic Dean.
The Teacher must be able to:
Work with the Elementary/Middle School Academic Dean and High School Science Department to teach innovative, child-centered, Science program for Grades 6-8.
Utilize hands-on, lab-based activities that reinforce content, skills and the fun of learning.
Partner with outside organizations to bring resources and experiences in to the program.
Demonstrate competency in integrating technology into instruction and assessment.
Participate in all Elementary/Middle School events and professional development activities and duties assigned by the Academic Dean as well as the meeting schedules set by the School.
Bachelor’s degree in Middle Education, with a major concentration in Science; a Masters Degree in a Science related field preferred
Instructional Certification Required, PA Instructional Certification preferred.
Collaboratively developed Science curriculum that is part of an overall elementary program and/or familiarity with FOSS Program
Minimum 3 years’ experience working with middle school aged children
Current knowledge of Science education and curriculum design and mapping
Excellent organizational, verbal and written communication skills
High energy, positive and collaborative spirit, and a commitment to transforming knowledge into effective understanding
Local candidates preferred as there is no relocation reimbursement available
This position is exempt from the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
