St. Mark’s Dean of Academics oversees the School’s academic curriculum: what is taught, when, and how. Additionally the Dean oversees the academic progress of St. Mark’s students and their day-to-day academic experience, ensuring that the conditions exist for their best possible intellectual and character growth in St. Mark’s classrooms. The Dean of Academics chairs the Academic Council, provides curricular leadership and oversight of academic discipline, and is responsible for the design and management of the academic schedule and the smooth running of the Academic Office.
In defining its mission, St. Mark's states that it "educates young people for lives of leadership and service" challenging students "to develop their particular analytic and creative capabilities by both inspiring their academic and spiritual curiosity and kindling their passion for discovery." Valuing "cooperation over self-interest", the School encourages "each person to explore his or her place in the larger world beyond our campus." The next Dean of Academics will be an experienced, and energetic educational leader who understands the importance of building and stewarding strong relationships and community in an independent boarding and day school. He or she will be an inspiring, visible, confident educational leader who will engage positively with students, faculty and parents. The Dean reports to the Head of School and is a member of the School’s Senior Administrative Team. The successful candidate will enthusiastically embrace and champion St. Mark’s curricular initiatives and will be:
A highly experienced and respected classroom teacher
Well versed in both latest pedagogical trends and successful stalwarts, with the ability to assess and effectively communicate what is mission appropriate for Mark’s
A skilled group leader and inspirational manager who has the ability to seek input and adroitly balance process with action and forward movement
Highly organized, prioritizing the running of an efficient Academic Office day?to-day (e.g., streamlining grades and comments process, managing standard communications to families, notifying faculty in advance of schedule changes, setting up meetings with families in a timely way)
Empathic and a good listener with the ability to communicate genuine caring about colleagues, students and the School
Adept at supporting faculty, enjoy coaching and mentoring and will continue to foster an environment committed to professional development and curriculum innovation
Able to skillfully and calmly manage the myriad of tasks, challenges and activities of school leadership
Passionate about—and possessing understanding of—all aspects of life at a boarding school
A trusting and trusted member of the Senior Administrative Team
Able to deal sensitively with conflicts among constituencies in the Mark’s academic community.
Chair the Academic Council, providing leadership for curricular planning and evaluation
Oversee the creation, implementation, and regular review of the School’s academic policies
Supervise Associate Dean of Academics, Scheduling Officer, Registrar, Gray Colloquium Coordinator, Director of Library, Director of Academic Technology, Director of Saturday Program, and along with the Assistant Head of School/Dean of Faculty, the Director of the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning, and an Executive Assistant
Oversee Academic Discipline
Oversee the academic advising process and provide final approval for course enrollments in consultation with Department Heads
Lead Faculty Meetings on student progress
Engage in regular contact with students, parents, graduates and prospective families around academic policy matters
Coordinate the distribution to parents and faculty of grades, comments, advisor letters and other academic materials, employing technology effectively and efficiently
Work with the Students and Faculty Administrative Group to ensure coordination of the School’s academic, residential and athletic programs
Oversee the course enrollment process and creation of the School schedule
Coordinate with College Counseling Office in providing information for colleges and the NCAA
Maintain professional contacts to help bring “best practices” to the School
Teach one section
Serve in Residential Duty Capacity, as identified by Head of School and Dean of Students
