Heathwood Hall Episcopal School has retained Southern Teachers to guide its search for a dynamic, personable, empathetic, and experienced educator to lead both the Early Childhood (PK2- PK4) and Lower School (K-4th) divisions. Reporting directly to the Head of School and serving on the senior leadership team, the Head of Early Childhood and Lower School oversees operations and staff; serves as the spokesperson for the divisions, articulating programs, expectations, behavioral guidelines, and other essential information; and maintains the mission-focus of the curriculum and program of both the Early Childhood program (enrollment 90+) & Lower School (enrollment 170).
The EC/LS Head will be joining a school experiencing significant enrollment growth and a senior leadership team with exceptional synergy. The Upper School’s Winterim and the Senior Exhibition Capstone Thesis project are over 30 years old, and the school recently introduced a place-based learning initiative called Columbia Connections that utilizes the greater Midlands Area–and its people, institutions and businesses–to contextualize the curriculum. Recent and upcoming additions include a Mindfulness program in the Middle School, the construction of a Maker Space, and the development of a new natural learning environment playground for the Early Childhood division. This candidate will also inherit a new curricular initiative–LEAP Week–that sets aside a week of school for experiential learning in grades 1-4. Heathwood also has a robust outdoor education program and an on-campus high and low ropes course.
Heathwood Hall, founded in 1951, is located in southwest Columbia, SC, on a 120-acre plot of land adjacent to the Congaree River. With numerous residential neighborhoods within the city limits, Columbia is an ideal city in which to raise a family. In addition to serving as the home to the State Capitol Building, the University of South Carolina, and the army’s largest military training base (Fort Jackson), Columbia is experiencing unique economic growth.
The ideal candidate will enjoy interacting with various constituents and will be responsible for all activities involving students, their families, faculty, and staff. He or she will work effectively with parents, the Heathwood Parents Association, various booster clubs, and the development office, and embrace being the spokesperson and face of the two divisions. Applicants should enjoy working with the Office of Admissions and Enrollment Management to recruit and retain mission-appropriate students, to welcome new families into the Heathwood Hall community, and to help them to understand the school’s culture. To be effective the EC/LS Head will need to write well and communicate effectively face-to-face; be well-versed in childhood development, student-centered pedagogies, and ongoing changes in early childhood and elementary education; and be self-aware and self-driven, kind and gracious, honest and trustworthy, and a successful teacher and administrator, preferably in an independent school.
