Direct Reports: Director of Student Life, Lead Advisors, and School Counselor
The Dean of Students will ensure the alignment of all aspects of student life with Drew’s mission. The Dean of Students will develop a vision for the school’s student support and advising programs to foster the socio-emotional health and growth of each student, seeking to strengthen and refine his or her voice, self-awareness, and empathy. As a member of the school’s senior leadership team, the Dean of Students is also responsible for forwarding Drew’s overall strategic vision and supporting all its programs and initiatives. Key initiatives will include: the development of clear developmental outcomes for each year of the student experience and the organization and alignment of all programs and activities around these outcomes; the analysis and targeted improvement of the various roles involved in providing student support; the exploration of a restorative justice approach to instances when students fail to adhere to community standards.
Essential duties and responsibilities
Guide all systems of student support including Student Support Meetings;
Oversee the continuing development of the advisory program: guiding lead advisors in the development of its curriculum and the training of advisors;
Lead proactive conversations about upholding the school’s values and supervise the school’s disciplinary system, including the Academic Integrity and Disciplinary Committee process, helping to train the team and guide the group’s decision-making;
Foster Drew’s sense of community, directing the school’s Community Time program, working to integrate thematically the school’s student community gatherings;
Actively develop student leadership on campus and supervise Student Council and the Freshmen Mentorship Program;
Lead the design of the Freshman Seminar class and teach it;
Serve as an active spokesperson for the school and its values at admissions and other events;
Coordinate beginning of the year events: retreats, orientations, school picnic;
Oversee the attendance system;
Coordinate the events leading to (and including) senior graduation;
Play a key role in the school’s emergency preparedness and incident management team.
Qualifications and Skills
Innate ability to connect with high school students, to inspire them, and to hold them accountable;
Collaborative and decisive management, including effective conflict resolution;
Leadership that combines vision with excellent organizational and administrative skills;
Flexibility to adapt to and be able to prioritize in a rapidly changing and often emotional environment;
Superb communication skills, both in writing and as a public speaker;
Experience teaching and leading in a high school context.
