The McGillis School in Salt Lake City, UT seeks a Middle School Director to begin July 2018. The Middle School Director will serve on The School’s senior leadership team, and is responsible for providing leadership, vision, and overseeing program for the Middle School faculty, students, and families.
The McGillis School is a K-8 school with the deepest sense of community. Our 440 students are taught to live ethically, think critically, and appreciate the value of each individual. Our purpose is to create individuals committed and able to repair the world.
The McGillis School is a young and extraordinary independent school community which draws from Jewish values and traditions. A high priority is placed on the support, collaboration, and communication about and for the students with the administration, faculty, and families. The opportunity for the next Middle School Director is to continue a strong middle school program trajectory, building on past success and taking advantage of forward momentum. Specifically, in addition to continuing the development of and supporting Outdoor and Environmental Education, arts, and foreign language (Spanish and Hebrew) programs, the Middle School Director will help shepherd a relatively new program of Integrative Studies, which integrates science, history, and English for each grade level 6-8. The opportunity also exists for further development of the Lower School’s work toward a standards-based approach to assessment in which teachers identify priority standards and assess with proficiency scales.
The academic and administrative leadership team is a collaborative and supportive group who values the success of the student and the success of the institution as the priorities by which to make decisions. The Head of School serves as the primary supervisor to all members of the leadership team including the Middle School Director. The faculty are committed and hardworking educators who want to be supported, directed, and inspired by the Middle School Director.
Reporting to the Head of School, the Middle School Director has primary responsibility for the program integrity and the academic and social-emotional well-being of 160 students in grades 6-8, and the professional support and development of the teaching and support faculty of 23 professionals. The communication with and building of relationships and partnerships with parents and families is an essential piece of success in this role.
Salt Lake City sits at the base of the Wasatch Mountain range that provides recreation opportunities from world class skiing, hiking, mountain biking, and trail running within 15 minutes of The School. The city of Salt Lake is a small but sophisticated city with nationally recognized ballet, opera, and symphony companies, and an affordable cost of living. The McGillis School is located in the northeast quadrant of the city, adjacent to the University of Utah and within walking distance of three hospitals and a large research park. The parent demographic of the school is of highly educated parents (many MDs, PhDs, JDs, professors, and researchers), most of whom came to Utah from out of state, and clearly value education.
The successful candidate will be a person of integrity and high character who values the unique opportunities of leadership in an independent school setting. Intelligence, confidence, and humility will make them a strong and effective leader. A high value is placed on collaborative and collegial interactions. The successful candidate will have spent significant time in the classroom, ideally with a focus on interdisciplinary teaching and learning, and will have developed a comprehensive understanding of and appreciation for middle school education, including the academic, physical, social, emotional, and ethical development of middle school students.
