Position Purpose: The Director of Communications will lead, plan, direct and implement overall strategies for all communications and marketing on behalf of The Howard School in order to raise visibility, advance its brand, and articulate clear messaging to internal and external constituencies. Leads the generation of online content that engages the community audience and leads to measurable action. Manages the development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic material, including the website, to ensure current and consistent information is being shared and updated through article links, stories, newsletters and events). Coordinates all communications with all divisions of the school and manages the master communications calendar. Develops a community ambassador and brand program.
Essential Job Duties/Responsibilities:
Plan and implement, in cooperation with the Director of Advancement and the Director of Admissions, a comprehensive long-range marketing and communications plan including outreach into the community and internal and external communications. Review, evaluate, and update this plan as needed. Represent the school and be an active participant in the community.
Handles all communications for The Howard School, following the established communications plan. Working with the Advancement Coordinator, develops editorial calendars for multiple platforms, oversees all social media, printing, poster output, and other communications related tasks. Provides oversight, working with the Advancement Coordinator, and in conjunction with the Director of Admissions and the Board of Trustees, to create an overall marketing plan for the school. Promotes the School image in the community.
Develop and manage an integrated online presence on social media platforms.
Update and implement existing Communications plan working with all divisions of the school to ensure a clear message and process.
Manage media relations, including writing and distributing press releases and cultivating relations with local media.
Attend and photograph on- and off-site School events; maintain the archival photo library for all Howard School events.
Review the production of all school publications, event invitations and programs, Parents Association materials, etc.
Collaborate with Admissions Office on admissions-themed advertisements, marketing materials, events, tours, informational sessions and relationships with other schools.
Produce, the Insights Annual Report and the monthly Howard Highlights newsletter, and develop and approve emails to go out to the community and maintain consistency in marketing plan.
Oversee the maintenance of the School website, along with the Advancement Coordinator, Assistant Head of School and the Director of Assistive and Instructional Technology.
Maintain relationships with website vendors, photographers, graphic designers and printing firms.
Maintain common editorial and graphic standards across School publications for branding reputation and integrity.
Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the job.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of five (5) years Communications and Marketing experience required.
Experience in independent school setting preferred.
Technical skills that support the essential job duties and responsibilities as described above.
Ability to write, edit and design for departmental publications.
Demonstrated experience with photography, videography, website content management and design, and social media marketing.
Proven track record as an independent and goal-oriented manager with a dedication to meeting deadlines
Ability to write for multimedia.
Knowledge of appropriate standards and formatting for online media.
Ability to use current computer software and e-mail systems.
Public speaking experience, excellent written and verbal communication skills.
