The Fisher Fellows at Thacher program is designed to attract talented, early-career teachers to develop their craft at one of the nation’s leading independent boarding schools. Through careful mentoring, extensive professional development, and deep immersion in the life of the school, fellows will develop the foundational skills critical to the craft of excellent teaching. The program represents Thacher’s commitment to nurture the development of the next generation of exceptional teachers.
The program is rooted in the conviction that hands-on experience in the classroom coupled with personal, expert mentorship is critical to the growth of beginning teachers. Fellows will receive supportive coaching on their own teaching from a dedicated mentor and other colleagues, while also visiting their peers’ classes regularly.
In addition to a commitment to the fellow’s development in the classroom at Thacher, the program supports several off-campus professional development opportunities. These programs are designed to give fellows the tools to thrive in the classroom and engage deeply in the School’s rich and vibrant extracurricular life.
The Fisher Fellows program is ideal for educators who seek an intimate and dynamic school environment that will allow them to develop deep and powerful relationships with students, both inside the classroom and out. Like all teachers at Thacher, fellows will work with students outside the classroom in the dorms, on the fields and courts, in the dining hall, on backcountry trails, and perhaps even on horseback. Thacher’s West Coast boarding school model is ideally suited for adults and students who seek an active, intimate community that provides both challenge and support.
We hope to attract exceptional candidates who are committed to a career in education, regardless of previous experience or academic fields of interest. The program also seeks candidates who might otherwise not have considered a career in residential or independent schools. We anticipate appointing our first fellow in the early spring, with duties to begin in early August.
We seek to interview candidates who are eager to engage actively in all aspects of boarding school life. This entails a commitment to residential life and advising, to athletic coaching or other participation in the school’s afternoon program, and to helping to lead rigorous wilderness camping trips. Additionally, we seek teachers who are dynamic leaders, lifelong learners, and compassionate mentors to adolescents.
The School recognizes that diversity in backgrounds and perspectives strengthens our community. Faculty at Thacher work with highly motivated, talented students from 24 states and 12 countries, 41% of whom identify as students of color. We seek to attract and nurture a faculty that reflects and supports our commitment to a diverse, inclusive, and multicultural community.
The School will offer a two-year appointment to the successful candidate. In addition to a highly competitive salary, support for professional development, and generous benefits, fellows will receive on-campus housing and meals provided by the School.
The search for the 2018 Fisher Fellow begins in November 2018, with an appointment anticipated in Spring 2019. Interested candidates should submit a letter of interest, a resume, and contact information for three references to Jeff Hooper, Dean of Faculty at firstname.lastname@example.org. Founded in 1889, The Thacher School is a coeducational boarding high school (grades 9-12) located 85 miles northwest of Los Angeles, California. The School serves academically talented students who will benefit from a rigorous college preparatory experience. The faculty and students live and work closely together in a community in which cooperation, trust, honesty, and respect are the cornerstones... of school life.
Together, we commit to the belief that demands in the academic classroom, when combined with those of mountains and horses, of sports and the arts, produce independent minds, strong bodies, and powerful character.
