During the 2018-2019 school year, the Cathedral School will unveil a brand new, innovative 2,700 square foot Library & New Media Center to serve the 300 students and 50 faculty in this rigorous, diverse community of learners. Cathedral is seeking a pioneering leader to (1) build on the strong existing library program and to (2) support the introduction of novel approaches to the use of media and technology in teaching and learning. The new space allows for the natural joining of these efforts under a single leader, who will work with the technology team and the School’s faculty.
(1) Leading a Library Program
We believe that reading (books!) remains a cornerstone of K-8 education. Leading the School’s library program involves:
Imagining, together with the School’s leadership team, the vast possibilities for the new Library & New Media Center, and developing forward-thinking strategic plans for the space that align with the School’s vision
Teaching library classes and collaborating with faculty on curricula
Maintaining a working knowledge of classic and current children’s and young adult literature, and developing (with input from teachers) summer reading lists
Managing and developing library collections (print and digital), databases, and other resources
Providing whole class and one-on-one research support to students
Promoting library/media resources to the whole school community, including the development and delivery of workshops and communications
Developing and managing the library/media center budget
(2) Inspiring Innovative Media Use and Teaching Technology
Cathedral’s commitment to innovation is evident throughout the School’s curricula, and will be supported by this position in a number of ways:
Actively involved with the development, supervision, and use of the new facility
Participating as an active member of the teams coordinating STEAM and Project-Based Learning initiatives at the School
Serving as a member of the faculty, teaching technology courses where appropriate, and collaborating/team-teaching with grade-level teachers, supporting the School’s curriculum and instruction of research skills, coding, and digital citizenship
Developing and leading faculty and parent workshops
Staying current with best practices in educational technology, assisting teachers in finding and preparing resources that support the integration and use of technology throughout the curriculum
Key qualities include:
A positive, inspiring, and collaborative personality
A passion for and commitment to books, other media, technology, and research
A history of collaboration, teamwork, and empathy with students, families, teachers, and staff
An entrepreneurial spirit and a demonstrated history of showing initiative
A desire to set and achieve priorities together with colleagues
This is a full-time staff position.
