Houston Academy is a premier independent, college preparatory school located in Dothan, AL. We are currently looking for a dynamic Head Varsity Football Coach, starting in the 2018 school year. The head football coach’s responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following.
Duties and Responsibilities
Serve as the CEO of the school’s football program, including the junior varsity program and strength and conditioning program
Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes in the football program
Manage and supervise football activities, contests, and practice sessions to promote individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, discipline, respect, and good sportsmanship
Work with other the Heads of Upper and Middle School, the Athletic Director, and other members of school staff to plan and put in place instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes
Ensure that all football coaches work together toward a common goal within the football program and provide unity with the feeder programs
Establish performance criteria for competition and evaluate individual student athlete performance on a regular basis
Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities
Plan, organize and execute off-season, summer, and pre-season training programs for all levels
Organize and directing a football summer camp at Houston Academy
Monitor and enforce student eligibility criteria for extracurricular participation
Work with the Athletic Director to schedule competitions and coordinate travel arrangements
Develop and coordinate a continuing evaluation of coaching program and make changes based on findings and the ongoing needs of the program
Accompany and supervise student athletes during athletic competitions in assigned sports on our-of-town trips
Instruct and advise students on relevant AHSAA regulations and safety practices, and complete the AHSAA coaching certification program
Promote school spirit within the context of the academic mission of the school and the athletic department, as a whole
Apply and enforce student discipline during athletic contests, practice sessions, and while on trips off-campus
Encourage sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation
Establish and maintain open communication by conducting conferences with parents, students, administrators, and teachers
Maintain a current inventory of all fixed assets within program
Annually establish and meet performance goals
Participate in community events
Perform other duties as assigned by the Upper School Head, Headmaster, or Athletic Director
Strong leadership skills and a positive, educational–based approach to coaching and teaching
A deep understanding of the game of football
The ability to teach the fundamental skills and team concepts of football with have the faculty to interact with student athletes of different ages and skill levels in a positive and professional manner
Knowledge of fitness and training regiments appropriate for high school athletes
A dynamic and energetic personality, with an ability to connect personally to young people
Excellent listening, and communication skills
A high degree of self-regulation, self-discipline, and control
A pervasive sense of integrity in order to serve as a role model and mentor for all students at Houston Academy
An ability to work effectively and collaboratively with coaching peers in other sports
Applicants should have a Bachelor Degree or higher and be prepared to serve in a teaching capacity at the high school or middle school level
Experience in a successful football program with a particular emphasis on rebuilding a struggling program

Houston Academy is a co-educational day school for three-year-old preschool through twelfth grade. The school was founded to fill the community’s need for a college preparatory school to serve the Dothan area and surrounding communities. The nineteen-acre campus is located in one of Dothan's finest residential areas. Located in the southeast corner of Alabama, Dothan is a progressive community of approximately 67,000, with nearly 225,000 people in the metropolitan area. It offers cultural and recreational activities as well as a two major medical centers, a community college, a four-year university, and a school of osteopathic medicine.
The campus, which was renovated in 1995, features four modern buildings connected by covered walkways. Included in the facilities are forty-five classrooms; two daycare rooms; library; Lower School science lab; Upper School labs for chemistry, biology, physical science, and Middle School science; state of the art Lower and Upper School art rooms; Lower and Upper School computer labs; two gymnasiums; a classroom for music and band; and a cafetorium. In 2002, the Dove Center was completed. It houses the Upper School English department, a computer lab, a computer classroom, art room, yearbook room, and the library. The school also maintains two playgrounds with one having a young children’s gazebo and the other newly renovated in 2005 with a covered area; along with a practice football field, and a practice baseball field. In 2013, a state-of-the art student activities center was built. Varsity games are played at a nearby community recreational center with some of the finest facilities in the Southeast.
In December of 2012, Houston Academy became a “MacBook School,” issuing MacBook Pros to all students in grades 5-12. Students in the lower grades have access to interactive smart board technology, as well as iPads. In addition, all teachers are issued MacBooks, and teachers teaching grades K5-4 are issued iPads.
Enrollment is currently 651 students in grades Pre-Kindergarten/3 through 12. Enrollment for the school is at a historic high.
The Strategic Plan has created a separate Middle School (grades 5-8), and plans are currently in the works to build a Fine and Performing Arts center.
