The Nightingale-Bamford School seeks a forward-thinking Director of Health and Wellness for a full-time post beginning in the fall of 2018. This new position offers an exciting opportunity to lead the design and implementation of a K-XII health education program that examines the intersections of physical, mental-emotional, and social health. In doing so, the Director of Health and Wellness will help solidify Nightingale-Bamford’s status as a leader in providing exemplary, relationship-centered health education and promoting wellness and well-being community-wide.
In addition to acting as the department head for K-XII health education, this individual will teach within the health education department, oversee the continued development of the K-XII curriculum, and coordinate all health-related efforts and communications within the school community to better enable reinforcement and integration. Collaboration with school counselors, school nurse, physical education department, athletics staff, school chef, human resources, security, and divisional wellness teams, among others, will be essential to this role.
Director Responsibilities • Lead the design of a comprehensive model program in K-XII health education that examines the intersections of physical, mental-emotional, and social health o This will involve enhanced health literacy efforts with a focus on mental-emotional health and tending to the more pressing issues facing children and adolescents; this includes but is not limited to: healthy decision-making and relationships; sexual health and sexuality; substance use, misuse and abuse; and the impact of technology and social media use on health. • Coordinate all health-related programming throughout the schoolhouse and communicate regularly with associated stakeholders • Support the development of a K-XII mindfulness education program • Develop parent education resources and partner with the parent body to increase engagement and collaboration • Construct a faculty/staff health and wellness initiative to enhance health literacy and wellness promotion efforts • Provide consultation school-wide on health-related concerns and policies • Regularly monitor community health issues to provide more responsive, data-driven programming • Serve as the community authority on child and adolescent health research and best practices in community health practice
Department Head Responsibilities • Oversee the health education curriculum and supervise respective faculty • Serve as lead health education teacher and mentor to departmental colleagues • Promote professional growth and educational opportunities within the department • Keep current with best practices in health education and pedagogy • Serve on the Academic Affairs committee and collaborate with the Associate Head of School, division heads, and other department heads on issues surrounding the academic program
Requirements • Minimum of a masters-level education in public health or another health-related field • Experienced health educator; previous employment in a K-XII (or similar) environment preferred • Training in best practices in K-XII health education • Experienced public speaker with strong communication skills • Collaborative team member with a high level of emotional intelligence and a good sense of humor • Ability to engage in a lively and complex independent school environment
