The Director of Student Life (Grades 9-12) is a full-time, 12-month position, reporting to the Head of the Upper School. This position serves as a member of the Upper School Administrative team and has overall responsibility for student programs, the advisory program, the discipline system, clubs and activities, and school sponsored social gatherings. In addition, this role includes teaching one class.
Professional and Leadership
Serve as a curator of student culture at Potomac; focus on the “who” side of students and the Upper School experience.
Foster a strong sense of community and spirit and promote the School’s core values in the Upper School.
Work with divisional leadership to ensure the Upper School’s educational program delivers on the School’s mission.
Develop and coordinate class level activities and trips with grade deans and faculty leaders.
With the Director of Student Support, lead the advisory program, oversee advisory assignments and plan advisory curriculum and activities.
Collaborate with the Director of Curriculum and Academics, Director of Student Support, Learning Specialists, STEPS coordinators and others to ensure support for all students’ academic growth.
With Grade Deans, lead and guide the student discipline process and implement Student Handbook policies.
Plan and organize weekly Assembly speakers and special programs with division head and deans.
Provide vision and oversight for the Upper School clubs and activities program.
Oversee student leadership selection and programs for grades 9-12 with support from deans.
Oversee class field and overnight trips; ensure all appropriate policies, procedures and supervision are in place; attend field and/or overnights when necessary.
With Division Head, collaborate and manage the transitional programs of IS students to the US – “stay the course” for current 8th Oversee student orientation programming.
Communicate with students about assemblies, calendar items, and other relevant information.
Work with Assistant Head of School and Division Head to implement the School’s strategic initiatives and key K-12 priorities in the Upper School.
Fulfill all other duties and responsibilities assigned by the School.
Be a collaborative colleague, foster the spirit of teamwork and rapport with students, advisors, and teachers.
Demonstrate maturity, humility, professionalism, confidence, integrity, confidentiality, and a strong work ethic.
Envision systems and ways to strengthen programming to enhance the student experience.
Be organized with logistics and effective with execution of events.
Work effectively with the US Admin Team and the four grade level deans.
Inspire and connect well with high school students.
Have demonstrated experience working with parents and families in support of the overall student experience.
At least 5 years prior experience in a similar student life role.
Proven leadership abilities.
Experience or prior work in independent schools.
Successful track record working with students and student life programming.
Outstanding interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
Demonstrated skill using technology.
