The school is seeking a theater teacher for a well-established school drama program featuring both curricular theater/drama classes as well as extracurricular theater opportunities for students. The ideal candidate will have an MFA in acting or directing, with professional experience as a performer, director, and educator. Candidates will be expected to teach classes in the fundamentals of acting, improvisation, and scene creation, as well as coach advanced students through the first directing experiences. Experience should include direction of classic plays, as well as introductory work in a variety of areas, which could include (but is not limited to) voice and speech, stage combat, classical text, improvisation, playwriting, movement for the stage, or children’s theatre. Familiarity with basic technical theater is a plus.
Candidates will have demonstrated a passion for theater arts, experience creating a classroom environment where students are comfortable exploring boundaries and taking risks, are enthusiastic about working with both middle and high school students, and enjoy working in a collaborative environment.
Essential Functions and Specific Duties
Teach up to four classes, including all elements of instructional planning, implementation and assessment.
Evaluate the academic and social growth of students, prepare report cards and maintain appropriate records.
Communicate regularly with parents and administrators on student progress.
Supervise students in out-of-classroom activities during the school day and after school.
Serve as an advisor for a group of 10-12 students, providing guidance to students in a variety of academic and socioemotional areas.
Direct two full-scale, extracurricular productions a year in addition to other curricular and extracurricular, smaller-scale productions.
Collaborate with teachers and students to develop original, student-generated material for performance on stage.
Fulfill other duties as assigned.
The optimal candidate will be knowledgeable and experienced in acting, directing large productions, teaching, and curriculum design in theater arts. Candidates will possess a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, preferably in theater or theater education. An MFA in acting, directing, or education as well as experience in independent school would be highly desired.
