For over 50 years, The Gateway School has transformed the lives of children who have experienced academic difficulty as a result of a language-based learning disability (dyslexia, reading and writing disorders), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), executive function disorder, visual-spatial or auditory processing difficulties, and/or gross and fine motor coordination issues. Located on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, Gateway enrolls 160 students between the ages of 5-14 in a Lower School and Middle School. In small classes with a low student-to-teacher ratio, faculty and therapists meet students where they are, individualize instruction accordingly, and develop them into skilled, strategic, independent learners who are capable of advocating for themselves and who are prepared to transition into mainstream school and life.
The Gateway Lower School, serving students ages 5-10, is seeking a nurturing and collaborative individual with a Special Education and Early Childhood background to join our teaching team mid-year. The Assistant Teacher supports the Head Teacher in the development and implementation of instruction in all subjects for a class of 9-10 students. The position involves daily collaboration with the Head Teacher and other professionals. The ideal candidate has worked with students with learning disabilities, and is eager to learn from an experienced team of professionals.
Bachelor’s degree in Education or related field
Master’s degree in Special Education, or enrollment in a Master’s program, preferred
Training in and experience teaching using Preventing Academic Failure, Teaching Basic Writing Skills, Stern Math and/or Singapore Math preferred
Independent school teaching experience preferred
Knowledge of the cognitive, linguistic, and developmental needs of elementary students
Strong communication and organizational skills
