Cape Henry Collegiate seeks an Associate Director of College Counseling who, in conjunction with the Director of College Counseling, will be responsible for administering all aspects of the college counseling program. He/she will guide Cape Henry students through a process of self-exploration that helps identify colleges and universities that fit the educational needs, financial resources, interests, and personality of each student.
Primary Responsibilities Include:
Counsel students and their families through all aspects of the college process. Assist students with researching colleges, crafting college lists, writing essays, completing applications, and applying for financial aid. Ensure students and parents understand how decisions in high school can impact the college process. Engage in individual meetings as well as formal presentations to a variety of constituents.
Plan and implement programming for students and families, including mock admissions workshops, campus tours, evening presentations, application workshops, and information sessions.
Write clear and persuasive letters of recommendation (approximately 40-50 letters per year).
Possess a comprehensive understanding about the many facets of college admissions, including differing levels of selectivity, financial aid, standardized testing, and academic programs at schools across the country and beyond.
Educate community members on the changing landscape of higher education
Advise students on their Upper School curricular choices and work closely with faculty to position graduates for academic success in college.
Assist with the process for all nominated scholars, Governor’s School applicants, and competitive scholarships. Help with the Tidewater College Fair and AP testing.
Stay current on best practices and trends in college counseling, including new platforms and technology.
Participate in state and national college counseling organizations and pursue opportunities for professional growth.
Work with coaches, teachers, advisors, and other community members to form a team of support for Cape Henry students.
The Associate Director will be open to continuously learning about the dynamic aspects of higher education. He/she will likewise understand the mission and student body of Cape Henry and communicate these characteristics through cultivated relationships with admissions representatives.
The Associate Director needs to be able to work positively with a diverse group of students and families. Ideal candidates will be fully engaged in the Cape Henry community and bring enthusiasm and energy to their work; have firsthand experience in selective college admissions and/or secondary-school college counseling; possess strong counseling skills and capacity for coordinated work with adolescents, families, school colleagues, and professional peers outside the School; and have strong skills in organization, time management, and written and verbal communication. High ethical standards and the ability to maintain strict confidentiality are essential. A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree or higher is strongly preferred.
