A critical component of this role is to ensure that policies, practices, and curricular direction within the department are mission-aligned and in accordance with the school’s goals and the department’s internal agreements.
This individual is the advocate for the science department, while at the same time supporting the wider mission of Country Day. The department chair will advise the administration in decision-making related to the department, and serve as instructional coaches to the other members of the department. The chair acts as a voice for the department’s work within the school community and beyond. Chairs work collaboratively with other department leaders in the Upper School, and across other divisions; they are supporters of best practices, professional development, and professionalism.
The ideal department chair will:
Possess a deep passion for science;
Have enthusiasm, flexibility, and a desire to collaborate with colleagues both in the department and across disciplines;
Have a desire to develop curriculum that focuses on the real-world application of science and hands-on learning;
Create activities and opportunities that encourage curiosity, exploration, innovation, problem-solving, and the use of technology;
Foster a supportive and caring classroom environment in which students can learn and interact positively with one another through student-centered instruction, collaboration and authentic assessment;
Contribute to school life as a positive community member in ways that go beyond his/her role in the classroom; and
Lead by example, both in the classroom and out, and strive to draw out the best in department members.
The department chair must hold at least a Bachelor’s degree. Prior teaching experience is expected; preference will be given to candidates with experience at independent schools. Preference will be given to individuals with deep knowledge and teaching experience in Chemistry.
Familiarity with computers and expertise in the use of technology to enhance instruction is also preferred. To perform this job successfully, an individual should have working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, Power Point), and be able to learn to use other applications and hardware (Google Drive, Apple TV, On Record, Blackboard, etc.).
The ideal candidate will possess or demonstrate the following: a growth mindset, self-motivation, positive energy, strong interpersonal skills, a service-oriented and team approach to work, approachability, openness to new and divergent ideas, excellent oral and written communication skills, and comfort in an educational setting where children and adults are present.
