Flint Hill School is a co-educational, college preparatory, independent day school for students in Grades JK-12 located on two campuses in Oakton, VA, 14 miles from Washington, DC. John Thomas is Headmaster for Flint Hill, which was founded in 1956 with a simple idea: to provide students with the opportunities afforded by an exemplary education. There are 250 faculty and staff. There are a total of 970 students at Flint Hill School. Flint Hill’s four core values of respect, responsibility, honesty and compassion are the fundamental principles that guide all interactions within the School community. The current endowment of the School is $4 million. The Flint Hill Annual Fund raised $1.23 million in 2015 – 2016, and the School is in the planning stage of a significant capital campaign. There are nearly 5,700 alumni and more than 800 current families at the School. This opportunity is available in July 2018 following the retirement of the School’s current Director of Development.
Reporting directly to the Director of Institutional Advancement, the Director of Development will oversee and manage the day-to-day operations of the Advancement Program, with a particular emphasis on broadening the major gifts pool, overseeing the prospect identification and portfolio management for the fundraisers in the office and strengthening donor communication. The Director of Development will manage, lead and supervise a staff of five (5) including direct reports in the Director of Annual Giving, the Director of Alumni Relations, the Director of Major Gifts, and the Engagement and Stewardship Officer. The Director of Development will work with high-level volunteers including board members, development committee members and campaign volunteers.
The ideal candidate our client seeks is a thoughtful, articulate and experienced advancement professional who can both effectively lead staff and serve as a superb front-line fundraiser. The ability to help orchestrate and run a capital campaign is essential to the mission of the advancement effort. In addition, at Flint Hill, cultural fit is of equal importance to a candidate’s ability to perform the tasks associated with this role. To that end, Flint Hill seeks candidates who are self-starters, problem solvers, leaders and effective communicators, who embody the School’s core values. This is a high profile position which requires a strong ability to build consensus and goodwill on behalf of the School with its loyal constituency. The Director will be expected to develop strong relationships with the full range of the School’s constituents and to secure annual, capital, endowment and planned gifts that support and advance the Flint Hill School mission.
