About You You are a highly productive self-starter who has demonstrated success working with students with a range of learning needs and styles. Your understanding of the academic, social, and behavioral characteristics of upper school students equip you to provide a motivating and engaging learning environment. As a member our Upper School English team, you will plan, organize, develop, and conduct comprehensive lesson plans and instruction and have proven yourself as someone who can tackle even the most challenging assignments with determination, humor, and the best possible outcome for students.
To be successful in this role, you must be able to: • Provide students with instruction in the basic elements of grammar, formal usage, punctuation, vocabulary development, critical reading, and writing skills. • Collaborate with School colleagues and external resources to identify the specific learning needs and social-emotional developments of each student. • Help students gain self-awareness of their learning style and needs, introducing strategies to assist students in independently improving their academic performance. • Ensure academic progress that emphasizes scaffolding for effective learning and inquiry • Introduce concepts of characterization and character movement, setting, conflict, and theme that require students to analyze figurative details such as metaphor, simile, and symbolism • Instruct students in composition development that progresses from a single paragraph into five-paragraph essays and culminates in three- to five-page essay that includes topic sentences, thesis statements, and varied sentence structure • Instill executive functioning skills in the areas of time management, organization, study and notetaking skills, test-taking skills, goal setting, and the preview/review of work • Provide academic coaching for students with documented needs and drop-ins • Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Head of School or his/her designee
Qualifications: • Bachelor's degree in English or special education required; advanced degree preferred • Proficiency in subject matter and subject-specific training and instruction • Demonstrated knowledge in teaching principles, theories, methods, behavior management techniques, and conflict resolution strategies • History of continued education or professional development in general education or assigned subject area(s) through in-service training programs or independent studies
