Introduction SophieConnect provides quality online courses underpinned by the educational philosophy and mission of Sacred Heart education. SophieConnect offers AP-and non-AP full-year and semester-long courses to high school students. To instill confidence and success in college and beyond, students take advantage of guided inquiry in an asynchronous, flexible, and safe Sacred Heart environment. SophieConnect teachers are experienced educators, well versed in mission-driven education, experts in their discipline, and well qualified to provide challenging, engaging, and innovative online courses. All classes are facilitated via Blackboard.
We are currently accepting applications from experienced educators to teach the following course for the 2018-2019 school year:
AP Computer Science A The Advanced Placement Computer Science course covers Java and all the algorithms, data structures and programming concepts in the Advanced Placement Computer Science syllabus.
Expectations SophieConnect faculty are key to ensuring that students are successful in the online classroom. This commitment to student success requires faculty to work individually with struggling students by providing them one-on-one support through online meetings, extra feedback and collaborating with the academic support team. SophieConnect faculty are required to respond to student inquiries within 24 hours and be fully active in the online classroom five of the 7 days per week.
Course Design & Summer Workshop All new SophieConnect faculty are expected to take the Course Builder Summer Workshop. This training is a blend of hands-on, real-time training, course development, SophieConnect faculty expectations, best practices, pedagogy, creating inquiry-driven learning communities, and effectively using the online learning platform (LMS) and web conference system (Zoom). The three-week Summer Workshop is delivered asynchronously, in an online cohort format, using Blackboard. Some face to face meetings will be required via Zoom. The time commitment for new faculty varies based on previous experience using Learning Management Systems (such as Moodle, Blackboard) and/or classroom experience. The stipend to design a course over the summer is $500. A two-week Introduction to Sacred Heart Education online workshop is required for teachers new to Sacred Heart’s mission and philosophy.
Education A Master’s degree in computer science or related field is desired.
Experience Experience in teaching computer science and mathematics at the secondary level, including AP Computer Science A; strong knowledge of current trends in computer science education, including expansion of computer science to a broader audience of students; knowledge of contemporary programming languages; and a commitment to developing innovative assessments are highly desirable. Ability to work effectively and collaboratively over a distance is required. Knowledge of online learning pedagogy is desired. Strong writing and organizational skills, and a willingness to learn new technology are required.
