Job Description : This new role at Portledge School, beginning in July 2018, will require the successful candidate to have the vision, organization and creativity required to develop and lead a new initiative in the area of learning pathways, which is the enjoining of school life with real world learning opportunities that exist outside of campus. In addition he or she will be responsible for more traditional college counseling responsibilities as detailed below. In practice this role will require a heavier focus on college counseling from August - January and a heavier focus on career and learning pathways from January - June, as well as in the summer.
College Counseling Responsibilities include the following:
Guiding students and parents in all areas of the college process
Writing 10-20 letters of recommendation annually
Staying current on college admissions and other educational trends
Building and cultivating relationships with college admissions representatives
Teaching and/or co-teaching 11th and 12th grade college counseling classes
Attendance at a minimum of 5-8 evening programs dedicated to educating the community about the college process
Chaperoning the 10th grade class college visit overnight trip
Administering, proctoring and organizing additional proctors and all details for the PSAT, the preACT on one Saturday in the fall (date TBD), and all AP exams
Serving as an Upper School Advisor for 5-10 students
Career and Learning Pathways Responsibilities
Working to create meaningful and curricularly aligned career and learning opportunities with local and regional learning institutions to enhance student achievement outside the physical school environment thereby improving their ability to research and develop metacognitive skills while enriching their surface understanding of an issue, topic or career. These partnerships may be with local hospitals, arts centers, universities, museums, libraries, wildlife or wetland conservatories, etc.
Establishing exchange programs both internationally and domestically that involve real movement of people, or sharing ideas and learning using technology.
Working directly with teachers to connect in-school experiences with these real life learning opportunities.
Designing a template to document progress and impact of programs
Finding, scheduling and hosting expert speakers to support the program
Serving on a strategic plan goal committee in one or more of the following areas: School Culture, Student Experience, Social Justice and Equity
Job Type: Full-time
BA Degree minimum; advanced degree preferred
5-10 years experience in college counseling, college admissions, career counseling, academic advising or independent schools preferred.
Superb written and oral communication as well as organizational and time management skills
Belief in the critical importance of diversity in a school
