Westfield Friends School seeks a highly qualified and committed individual to oversee the learning and social/emotional support services for students in grades PreK through Eight on a part-time basis. The School Counselor will bring specialized knowledge and insight to our team, and will work closely with the faculty, district support service, head of school, parents, and outside professionals to strengthen connections between home, school, and community.
The candidate must have strong interpersonal skills, be excited about working in a highly collaborative environment, and be talented in providing counsel to students, parents, and colleagues through professional development and research-based practices.
Responsibilities: As a key resource person on our staff, the School Counselor will:
Collaborate with administrators, teachers, parents, and outside professionals to holistically support the needs of individual students through intentional prevention and intervention strategies
Serve as a resource and consultant on mental health and child psychology, connecting staff and families to helpful outside resources when necessary
Train and empower students to cope more effectively with environmental and cultural stressors
Assist parents and teachers in gaining a better understanding of students’ strengths and weaknesses.
Possess knowledge of differentiated instruction based upon student learning styles; consults with teachers on best practices to meet student needs
Coordinate meetings with families and teachers to discuss accommodations, recommendations, and other necessary supports/referrals
Support the design of professional development for faculty regarding differentiation, social/emotional needs, learning differences, and techniques for improving the learning of all students
Organize and/or present parent education programs in the evening on relevant topics (ex. emerging adolescence, cyberbullying, etc.)
Qualifications: A master’s degree from an accredited college or university is required. PA School Counseling certification preferred. Applicants must also have a clear vision for fostering a culture of student flourishing, and wisdom in interpreting various forms of educational testing. Desirable candidates will also be adept in early intervention strategies, pedagogical diversity across the curriculum, and be current in educational best practices.
