Latin School of Chicago, an independent K-12 school located in Chicago’s Lincoln Park area, is seeking a full-time Vocal Music Director. The position includes teaching middle school and upper school chorus classes, conducting concert performances and special events throughout the year, and acting as the music director for the annual musical. A bachelor’s degree in music education is required – a master’s degree is preferred – with an emphasis on vocal music/choral conducting, along with at least 5 years-experience working with middle school- and high school-aged chorus students. Extensive knowledge of young voices and vocal development and proficient conducting skills are a must, as are good piano skills and experience conducting instrumentalists. Proficiency in current best-practices in music education and overall technology are pluses.
Responsibilities include: teaching classes of 5th Grade Chorus, 6th Grade Chorus, 7/8 Grade Chorus, Upper School Chorus, Music Theory/Music Technology, and an extra-curricular program that includes an Upper School Female Ensemble, an Upper School Male Ensemble, and an annually combined Student/Faculty Chorus. All students study sight-singing and are introduced to basic music skills and techniques. The Vocal Music Director coordinates and hires the adjunct vocal faculty, and, with the instrumental music director, maintains all related equipment, classrooms, and practice rooms. The teacher is required to perform assigned supervisions, attend all faculty meetings, and, if called upon, act as a middle school homeroom teacher or upper school advisor.
