The Calhoun School, a leading progressive, independent, coeducational day school in Manhattan, seeks a full time Upper School Dean of Students to begin in July, 2018. The Upper School Dean of Students is responsible for administering, developing and supervising all aspects of student life in the division, which comprises approximately 250 students in grades 9 to 12. The Dean oversees the overall expericence and culture of students in the Upper School, and s/he is charged with fostering and maintaining an ethical community of respect that sustains a strong student life program consistent with the school’s progressive and student centered mission. The Dean reports to the Director of Upper School, collaborates closely with all constituencies, and teaches a small load of Upper School courses.
Supervise all student activities including town meetings, clubs and student publications.
Develop and supervise student leadership programs, and advise the student government.
Regularly consult with the Grade Deans, Learning Specialist, Counselor, Associate Director and Director regarding individual student concerns as well as grade-wide, school-wide and programmatic issues. This includes policy work.
Work with the Director, Associate Director, Social Justice Coordinators, and Director of Equity and Diversity to support student initiatives and other programs relating to diversity, equity, social justice and inclusion.
Develop a health and wellness curriculum in the Upper School that incorporates peer leadership and education.
With the Grade Deans and Counselor, oversee and coordinate the cluster system.
Work with other administrators to develop programs that address drug and alcohol education, health education, and other related issues.
Serve on the Review Board, and work with the Director, Associate Director and Grade Deans to coordinate and review disciplinary policy, philosophy and procedure.
Coordinate student orientation programming in conjunction with Grade Deans.
Organize professional development opportunities on adolescent development.
Supervise the yearbook, and organize an inclusive senior prom.
Serve on the Admissions Committee, and interview candidates.
Teach a small load of Upper School courses.
Serve as a cluster adviser.
The Upper School Dean of Students should have:
Teaching, administrative, and/or counseling experience in a middle or high school setting.
A progressive and humanistic mindset about working with students and colleagues.
Demonstrated experience initiating and implementing programs that support diversity, equity, and social justice.
Commitment to developing a comprehensive and proactive health and wellness curriculum.
Demonstrated evidence of participation in Professional Development experiences relating to supporting students on many levels.
Bachelor’s Degree required, Master’s Degree in a related field preferred.
