The Music Teacher reports to the Coordinator of Visual and Performing Arts and the Head of Middle School and works collaboratively with the faculty of Visual and Performing Arts, or VAPA. The Music Teacher develops a carefully structured program of music literacy for children aged 2 – 14 years old. This is a full time position. Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Teach whole groups of 2-5 year olds within the preschool classrooms
Teach break out groups of students in kindergarten-8th grade, including specialized selective classes such as Songwriting, Vocal Explorations, Percussion, and Choral Band
Lead the Middle School Orff Band
Provide and enrich the environment so children grow and flourish musically, socially, and emotionally
Plan music curriculum of songs, chants, games, and the use of musical instruments
Introduce children to musical terms, symbols, and world music
Coordinate and lead concerts and performances throughout the year including, but not limited to all school assemblies, holiday concerts, music shares, trimester performances, and Grandparents and Special Friends Day
Collaborate with other VAPA disciplines including Dance, Art, Photography, and Theater Productions
Order materials and equipment as agreed with the VAPA Coordinator
articulate goals and priorities set for the music program (established in collaborative dialogue with the program head and preschool staff)
develop and maintain 2-way communication with program head & staff
Attend all-school faculty and staff meetings and VAPA meetings
Degree in Music Education, or a related field
Teaching experience with 3 – 14 year old children
Knowledge and practice of the Kodaly and/or Orff methods is desirable
Montessori experience or credential is desirable
Strong work ethic and sense of humor
