Position Overview Lick-Wilmerding High School is looking for a part-time “shop tech” for the Technical Arts Department. This person would be responsible for keeping the machinery in the beautiful shops running safely and consistently. While the position would not be required to know how to fix all of the school's many machines, the ideal candidate must have a willingness to research, learn, and (when appropriate) manage the hiring of specialized individuals. This job also entails managing OSHA safety compliance, including keeping machine and chemical documentation up to date, organizing safety trainings, and interfacing with safety consultants. Finally, the ideal candidate would be familiar with creating support instructions and videos for students to use equipment safely and independently.
This is an hourly part-time position (up to 14 hours per week), with the potential to become full-time, if combined with the Digital Fabricator and Woodworker job (separate listing) and student advising.
Repair, learn how to repair, or hire and manage repair of most Tech Arts shop equipment
Manage preventative maintenance of most shop equipment
Assemble new tools and machinery
Manage documentation of preventative maintenance and repairs
Manage safety documentation and training documentation
Manage training sessions for new equipment and chemicals
Interface with HR, OSHA, and Safety Consultants
Assist with creation and maintenance of machine video and written instructions
Act as substitute teacher when needed
Assist students on specialized projects (when possible)
Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess:
Demonstrated safe use of tools in an OSHA approved or similar environment
Demonstrated experience with a variety of manual and CNC shop tools
Aptitude for technical problem-solving
Interest or understanding of object design and fabrication
Organized and detail oriented
Clear and efficient communication habits
Self directed and efficient with time
Commitment to equity and inclusion for students from all walks of life
Applicants should be able to comfortably lift a minimum of 20 lbs of class supplies and materials, be on your feet for 2–3 hours on a concrete floor, and be able to sit and work at a computer for 2–3 hours at a time. At times, students and machines make the shop environment noisy—tolerance of medium to loud noise is recommended. General shop and wood dust is common—applicants with allergies to these particles would likely find them challenging to manage.
