Health and Wellness Programs Coordinator The Health and Wellness Programs Coordinator is a new and innovative position in the Student Support Department, a cross-divisional department that includes learning specialists, counselors, school nurse, and athletic trainers. The mission of the Student Support Department at Isidore Newman School is to identify and reduce barriers to learning. The Health and Wellness Programs Coordinator will be responsible for researching, developing and implementing a comprehensive, multifaceted program that empowers Newman students to understand what is safe, healthy and effective in terms of caring for themselves, others and the world. The primary focus of the program is to increase student capacity to identify life challenges, formulate responses to those challenges, judge the efficacy of those responses and persevere in repeating this process as a crucial life skill. The Health and Wellness Programs Coordinator reports to the Chairperson of the Student Support Department.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
Develop flexible programs and interventions that educate students about what is safe, healthy and effective in terms of care for self, others and the world
Ensure that the programs and interventions are interdisciplinary, cross-divisional consistently, logically and thoughtfully implemented to promote the health and wellness of all students
Utilize research, including emerging national and international standards, to deliver content in health and wellness subject areas through direct classroom teaching and programming
Teach, as appropriate,health and wellness classes in either the middle or upper school Coordinate regularly with the middle and upper school counselors, and middle and upper school division heads to think proactively about the interface between students' off- and on-campus social lives, with a particular focus on critical, ethical and harm-reduction oriented decision-making.
The ideal candidate will have the following qualifications;
Bachelor's degree in Health, Psychology, Counseling, Media Studies, Media Literacy or a related field. Priority will be given to candidates with a Masters- or Doctoral-level degree in media literacy/studies and experience teaching adolescents.
Master's degree and five or more years of experience working in school settings are preferred. Applicants must have an understanding of the developmental stages of adolescents (and children).
Proven ability to connect with students (primarily grades 6-12) and faculty, along with demonstrated capacity for developing innovative programming and teaching around health and wellness.
A well-developed sensitivity, knowledge, and understanding of the diverse backgrounds of community members, a commitment to lifetime learning, and professional and personal integrity.
Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the following key social/emotional elements of health and wellness: media literacy, healthy relationships and consent, alcohol and other drugs, body image, nutrition, mental health, human sexuality, and stress management.
An understanding of and facility with the ubiquitous nature of digital/social media in the lives of adolescents.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to collaborate with kindness.
