Covenant Preparatory School is seeking a full-time Upper Grades (gr. 7 & 8) English Language Arts Teacher beginning July 1, 2018. This faculty member will be part of a school team consisting of additional teachers at the upper grade levels and an AmeriCorps Teaching Fellow. Preference will be given to candidates who also have the ability to teach an introductory level French or Spanish class. Covenant Prep teachers play a major role in all aspects of school life. In addition to teaching responsibilities, all teachers participate in the school’s advisory, athletics/activities, and service programs.
As an independent school, Covenant Preparatory School teachers are encouraged to exercise freedom and good judgment in creating teaching and learning experiences to best meet the needs of students. As a collective team, the faculty has developed a set of rigorous academic standards focusing on grammar and language usage, research and writing, reading, and presentation and discussion. Students read a broad range of texts, both literary and informational, with a particular sensitivity to cultural relevance. Similarly, students are challenged to develop writing skills that display strong command of language, communication, and creativity.
Candidates for the Upper Grades English Language Arts Teacher position must possess the following qualifications:
A bachelor’s degree in English, education, or another related field
3-5 years of experience teaching middle grades (grades 5-8)/upper grades youth, preferably in an ethnically diverse setting
A firm commitment to the Covenant Preparatory School mission
Candidates should also display:
A desire and ability to work in a high-energy educational environment that values flexibility and strong, positive relationships with students and their families
A willingness to contribute to all aspects of school life, including but not limited to advisory, athletics/activities, and other school activities
An appreciation for the learning assets of young adolescent, urban boys
The ability to work collaboratively with all members of the school community
A strong command of communication (written and verbal) and organizational (multi-tasking) skills
A familiarity with process-based writing pedagogies, as well as traditional and contemporary literature appropriate for the school’s students
Bilingual in English and Spanish (strongly desired, not required)
Additional Salary Information: Salary is commensurate with education and experience. Off-campus, shared housing may be provided.
