The Brearley School, an independent girls’ school serving over 700 students K-XII, seeks candidates for the position of Head of the English Department.
Founded in 1884, the school is a center of intellectual exuberance, attracting students from across and beyond New York City. Its mission has long combined outstanding academics with an insistence on larger purpose: we seek to prepare our students for principled engagement in the world.
Brearley teachers love to teach students who love to learn. They have the wisdom and skill to spark in students the ability to think critically and creatively. We count on our faculty to maintain an atmosphere of honesty and genuine respect for the thoughts of others. We actively seek to build, nurture and sustain a diverse faculty and student body.
Beginning with Class VI, the English Department introduces students to major literary works; it instructs students in close reading, clear writing, literary analysis, creative expression, oral communication of ideas and thoughtful debate. All English teachers teach in both the Middle and Upper School.
Academically, the Head of the Department is a superb teacher of both Middle and Upper School students, and distills scholarship equally well for 11- and 18-year-olds. The Head also draws on knowledge of both literary studies and pedagogy in order to guide the department’s review and development of its curriculum. Ease and excellence in spoken and written English are essential. Supervisory and human skills are intrinsic to the position. Empathy, discretion, flexibility, detachment and the ability to listen are important qualities.
Administrative duties include:
Running meetings of the department at appropriate intervals to discuss curriculum, professional development opportunities, and departmental and school matters;
Meeting monthly with other department heads and administrators with the expectation that the Head will represent the opinions of the department to the school leadership and to the larger community; meeting regularly with the Assistant Head of School for Academic Life;
Managing departmental business, including book ordering, record-keeping, assignment of coverage, departmental review and other duties as necessary;
Supervising the hiring of new teachers; mentoring new teachers and teachers taking on new responsibilities;
Providing support to the members of the department, according to their needs, in areas regarding curriculum development, scholarly interests, teaching strategies, collegial relations, evaluation and counseling of students;
Meeting with department members on an individual basis to facilitate personal and departmental business;
Assigning teaching duties in consultation with the members of the department and the Assistant Head of School for Academic Life;
Evaluating department members in accordance with the school’s evaluation process.
The Brearley School is an equal employment opportunity employer committed to hiring exceptional, dedicated teachers of diverse backgrounds. We consider qualified individuals for employment with the School regardless of race, color, religion, national origin, sex, age, disability or any other state or federal protected classification.
We seek candidates with an advanced degree in literature or related fields and at least six years of experience teaching English in grades 9-12, as well as an interest in teaching grades 6-8. The ideal candidate will have taught in both Middle and Upper School.
About The Brearley School
The Brearley School, an independent school for girls, was founded in 1884 to provide its students with a college-preparatory education equal in rigor to that of boys, and, in the words of the mission statement today, to prepare them for “active responsible citizenship in a democratic society.” Within a highly articulated 13-year curriculum, and with a 6:1 student-faculty ratio, teaching methods are varied, flexible and pragmatic, taking into account individual patterns of development and ways of learning. The School’s program is designed to challenge eager, able students intellectually, and to give each one the opportunity to gain competence, self-reliance and self-knowledge through academic achievement as well as experience in the visual and performing arts, sports, community service and a wide variety of extracurricular activities.
Brearley’s K-12 enrollment is divided into Lower School, Middle School and Upper School, and consists of about 690 students from throughout the New York metropolitan area who represent a diversity of backgrounds, experiences and points of view.
