This is a full time, 12-month position. The role of Director of Community Life is to strengthen the Charlotte Prep community by serving as a liaison between its various stakeholder groups: Students, parents, staff, and the larger Charlotte community. The core of the position is built upon a Diversity and Inclusion foundation and the successful execution of the school’s programs in this area, including faculty recruitment, development and retention; student recruitment and retention, curriculum, and student life.
The Director of Community Life will also have significant responsibilities supporting the leadership, service, and character development programs of the school, parent education, supporting the Parent Association in its work, and community outreach.
KEY AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY
Diversity and Inclusion:
Assess current programs and curricula regarding diversity issues and use those assessments to propose and develop new initiatives.
Research best practices in diversity initiatives and use those findings to inform school decisions.
Develop programs or communications strategies to promote diversity and inclusion, and assess the outcomes of those initiatives with a particular focus on their impact on recruitment and retention.
Assist with the development of policies and programs to attract, retain and promote a diverse faculty and staff and student body.
Facilitate professional development in diversity and inclusion to educate faculty and staff members.
Plan, develop, and market diversity and inclusion-focused educational opportunities, programs, and events for the Charlotte Prep community.
With the division heads and faculty members, evaluate, advise on, and support development of a diverse and inclusive curriculum across the divisions.
Provide resources to parents and staff on diversity and inclusion topics as needed.
Help to provide ongoing, regular programming for students in the area of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Coordinate and facilitate all aspects of student involvement and leadership related to diversity and inclusion, including conference selection and attendance.
Represent the school at local, regional, and national multicultural events as determined in conjunction with the head of school.
Pursue professional development opportunities in order to remain current with diversity and inclusion issues that may affect the school.
Serve on Charlotte Preparatory School Diversity and Inclusion Committee.
Support Charlotte Preparatory School’s BUDEE character development program in planning and assisting faculty with execution of activities in alignment with school mission.
Lead Charlotte Preparatory School’s service learning efforts for all divisions.
Assist PA & PA Liaison in their activities (event planning/coordination, etc) as needed.
Attend functions and events that might benefit our community.
Be a visible and enthusiastic presence at school events.
Reports directly to the Head of School.
Bachelor’s degree in appropriate area (such as community relations or diversity/inclusion/equity) from accredited university required; Masters or other advanced degree preferred.
Experience in community relations/diversity and inclusion preferred but not required.
Training in recognized diversity and inclusion programs preferred.
Experience working in a school setting preferred but not required.
A deep understanding of the issues, opportunities, and dynamics of difference.
A strong personal commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Team orientation – able to work effectively with other members of the school administrative team, faculty, parents, students, and other schools.
Exceptional communication skills, both oral and written.
Strong organizational skills with high levels of attention to detail.
Outstanding interpersonal skills - positive, enthusiastic, and warm towards others.
Strong work ethic; high energy, proactive.
Sensitive, diplomatic, and discreet; able to receive and integrate multiple perspectives. Able to confidently and tactfully coach upwards when necessary.
Project management experience is extremely helpful.
