Mercersburg Academy is pleased to offer an opportunity for dynamic college graduates to apply for a teaching fellowship. Our program pairs the fellow with an experienced teacher who will serve as your mentor as you learn all components of teaching in a boarding school environment. You will be fully immersed in class preparation, observing and then teaching classes, and all activities required of a faculty member such as coaching, dorm supervision, and advising students. This is a two-year program that offers a stipend, housing/meals, and full benefits. We are recruiting for two fellows, one for Biology and one for English. Reports To: Department Head & Assistant Head of School for Academic Affairs
The person holding this position is responsible for providing instruction in the appropriate academic department(s), assisting with extracurricular and residential duties, and participating in professional development activities to learn the craft of teaching in a residential setting.
Responsibilities and Duties include but are not limited to:
Teaching or co-teaching two sections in an academic department, adhering to course objectives and course of study as outlined in established departmental guidelines and curriculum, conducting varied and frequent assessments of student performance, utilizing appropriate technology in the classroom setting, keeping attendance and grade records, writing individual grade and comment reports as required by the school, maintaining regularly scheduled office hours for help sessions with students
Communicating positively and proactively with students, advisers, parents, colleagues, and administration in a professional manner in oral and written form
Meeting regularly with the assistant head of school for academic affairs, collaborating with the assigned mentor teacher and department head, reading and discussing assigned books and articles relating to teaching, attending the summer faculty institute, observing classes, attending faculty meetings and professional development opportunities provided by the school
This position will carry out additional assignments each term, e.g., coaching, dorm duty, advising, etc.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The position requires a person who has a keen interest in learning to teach adolescents and enjoys working with and relates well to both adults and students, is collaborative, and communicates well. This fellow needs to be organized as well as possess proficient technology skills. This fellow holds a full-time faculty position teaching or co-teaching up to two classes and carries out additional residential and co-curricular assignments each term.
