Overview of Position
LREI seeks a full time Middle School Humanities Teacher to support the progressive integration of language arts and social studies content and skills. The candidate is responsible for teaching both subjects and for planning collaboratively with her/his grade level partner. Each grade level humanities pair seeks out opportunities for team teaching and works with grade level teachers of other disciplines on integrated projects. Candidates will also be asked to serve as an advisor for a group of middle school students. Successful LREI teachers are lifelong learners who are reflective about their practice, find ways to bring ‘real life’ into their classroom including current events, the neighborhood and the city, and seek out professional development and leadership opportunities.
Candidates should be equally comfortable teaching language arts and social studies. A master’s degree in education with a focus on language arts or social studies and at least three years of successful experience as a teacher are preferred, but alternate pathways into the profession will be considered. Candidates’ pedagogy should be student-centered and candidates should be comfortable differentiating instruction.
A commitment to social justice and equity, cultural competence, the ability to work collaboratively, excellent communication skills, and a willingness to work closely with families are essential.

Founded in 1921 by Elisabeth Irwin (a contemporary and colleague of John Dewey, Caroline Pratt, and Lucy Sprague Mitchell), the school has been at the vanguard of pedagogical innovation since its founding. LREI’s goal is to educate students to become independent thinkers and lifelong learners and to pursue academic excellence and individual achievement, in a context of respect for others and service to the community.
