Lakeside School, an independent coeducational day school located in North Seattle, Washington, is currently recruiting for a part-time (0.5 FTE) Upper School Chinese position, starting late August, 2018. Chinese teachers at Lakeside aim to cultivate global citizens by fostering an exploration of cultural differences and similarities. They encourage the development of linguistic proficiency that enables students to draw connections between disciplines and exercise their intellectual curiosity through a global lens. Throughout the Language Department we teach our students language and culture so that they can reflect on their own culture through the prism of another.
The Chinese Teacher position, reporting to the Upper School Language Department Head, will join a department that consists of 10 faculty members, teaching approximately 34 language sections each year (Latin, French, Spanish & Mandarin Chinese), with a maximum class size of 18 students per class. Specific responsibilities include:
Teach four classes (levels to be determined). Teaching includes classroom instruction, with an emphasis on building oral proficiency, promoting students’ ability to read and write in the language, and exploring the culture and history of the Chinese-speaking world;
Write quarterly evaluations of students;
Maintain class webpage on Haiku/PowerSchool on a regular basis;
Conferences with students and colleagues;
Participate in New Faculty Retreat (late August) and Upper School Mentorship Program (ongoing);
Co-advise a group of between 8 and 10 Upper School students;
Actively participate in the work of the Languages Department on curriculum development and pedagogy including the professional development effort to establish the Integrated Proficiency Assessment as the dominant assessment paradigm in language instruction across the school
Attend department and faculty meetings as scheduled; and
Actively participate in the life of the school community.

Requirements and Qualifications
Successful candidates will be dedicated teachers holding a Bachelor’s degree in Chinese or other relevant field and should possess native or near-native proficiency in both Chinese and English (must be able to interact with colleagues, students and families proficiently in English). Candidates with experience teaching Chinese in high school or at the late middle-school level using communicative and task-based pedagogical practices are preferred. Also, candidates should have experience working collaboratively on a teaching team. The ideal candidate will have experience living in a Chinese culture; be computer literate; and proficient on a PC platform. Candidates must satisfactorily complete a nationwide criminal background check and a Washington State Patrol background check.
