Germantown Friends School is seeking a Middle School and a Lower School Learning Specialist to support students’ growth and progress through assessing student learning, through supporting teachers in their implementation of effective practices, and through direct intervention with students. This position is for the fall of 2018.
In the Middle School the Learning Specialist’s focus will be on supporting academic content, reading and writing, executive function and organization skills. In the Lower School, the Specialist’s focus will primarily be on reading and writing. These are full-time, ten-month positions which report to the Student Services Department Head and the appropriate Division Director.
Communicate with teachers, parents, administrators, and outside professionals in order to better understand and support students with diverse learning profiles.
Use formative and summative assessment tools such as Informal Reading Inventories, in order to document student progress and achievement, and where appropriate, assist teachers in their use of these tools in the classroom.
Assess and analyze student strengths and needs in order to recommend appropriate instruction to facilitate learning and growth (includes writing assessment reports).
Administer, score, and interpret individual standardized academic tests such as WIAT-III and WJ-III.
Provide direct instruction, generally in small groups, to students identified in partnership with classroom teachers.
Lower School: work in close partnership with teachers and the Division Director as a literacy leader, providing support and resources to ensure a comprehensive and effective literacy program and continuity of instruction across the grades.
Participate in Student Support Team meetings weekly, collaborating to ensure continued attention to the changing needs of individual students and accountability in use of effective strategies.
Maintain and update student records (student learning summaries).
A solid knowledge of the curriculum including the essential information, concepts and skills taught at each grade level
Experience with Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop model, ideally in a coaching role (Lower School required, Middle School preferred)
Familiarity with interpreting both individual and group administered standardized tests.
Experience or certification in a word study program such as the Wilson Program (Lower School only)
Master’s degree or higher in related fields (Reading Specialist, advanced training in Literacy)
Learning or Reading specialist certification preferred
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Background in teacher consultation and classroom collaboration
