Burgundy has two kindergarten classes, each with approximately 15-16 students that are taught by a team of two teachers. A low student to teacher ratio allows for the exploration of themes, the ability to work on short and long-term projects, and for open-ended discovery and problem solving. The kindergarten teams work together to create a learning environment that makes learning and thinking visible and that promotes collaborative inquiry. Parents are an important part of the early childhood experience at Burgundy and regularly volunteer in the classroom.
Preferred applicants will have considerable early childhood teaching experience, a familiarity with progressive education and/or Reggio Emilia approach, and a passion for working with young children. Lower school teachers report directly to the Assistant Head of School/Lower School Head.
The qualified candidate will have:
Genuine love of learning and desire to work with children as a facilitator of learning
A degree with a major in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or a related field
Collaborative spirit and interest in team-teaching to create a joyful and purposeful learning environment
Strong oral and written communication skills
Ability to organize and manage a positive classroom grounded in a belief that all learning begins with attending to children’s developmental social and emotional needs
Willingness to teach and adapt an integrated, inquiry-based curriculum
Commitment to teaching to diverse learning styles and differentiated instruction
Interest in outdoor, hands-on and environmental education
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Teach all subjects according to the stated curriculum, demonstrate thorough planning
Maintain an emphasis on preparing students for the joys and challenges of learning
Participate in curriculum development, committee, and task force work
Perform necessary administrative tasks and attend required meetings and events
Engage in reflective practice and various professional growth activity
Arrive by 8:00 a.m., depart after 3:45 p.m. Monday through Friday, except Tuesday, when faculty meetings begin at 3:45 p.m. and end at 5:00 p.m.
The School is closed for most national holidays, as well as Winter and Spring Break.
Salary and Benefits:
Salaries are based on a competitive independent school scale with increases for advanced degrees and experience; $2,000 step increase for master’s degree.
Burgundy Farm Country Day School will contribute $7,600 each plan year to each full-time employee’s benefits bank and prorated for employees who work at a minimum 75% of full-time, via our Section 125 Cafeteria Plan. This benefit may be taken as payment toward the school’s medical/dental/vision plans; dependent care expenses, subject to an IRS imposed limits, or may be taken as after tax cash to be added to monthly salary.
Retirement plan with TIAA, with a 3% employer contribution for two years and then 6% employer contribution after two years, irrespective of employee contribution.
A tuition benefit (1/2 discount) is offered for one qualified child attending Burgundy for children of 70% to full-time employees only. (Fac-staff children eligible for additional financial aid also.)
