St. Hilda’s & St. Hugh’s is an independent, Episcopal day school for boys and girls located in the Morningside Heights neighborhood of Manhattan’s Upper West Side. Founded in 1950, the school endeavors to create and educate a community diverse in race, culture, and religious beliefs, preparing its students to make meaningful contributions to our global society.
St. Hilda’s & St. Hugh’s has a Rowe Brothers 500 sq. ft. greenhouse which is an important space within the school and it is used as a classroom for the instruction of plant biology, ecology, and botanical explorations. Our students range in age from 3 years of age to 14 and the greenhouse teacher is expected to be an experienced instructor of school age children with an enthusiasm and passion for these topics.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Planning and implementation of instruction for grades nursery – 8th
Collaborating with other faculty within the science department on student science exhibitions
Maintenance of greenhouse and plant collection
Supervising contracted gardeners to care for the sanctuary garden, the play deck garden, and the 114th Street garden
Ordering and maintaining the appropriate plants and supplies needed for effective upkeep of the greenhouse
Maintenance of the organic pest control
Representing the school nationally and locally at educational conferences
Planning field trips for students to important botanical sites
Supervising student activities, such as lunch or recess, on a weekly, scheduled basis
Bachelor’s Degree in horticulture, plant biology, or other related discipline
Industry experience in horticulture/greenhouse upkeep
Experience with teaching school age children
