Founded in 1858, Shattuck-St. Mary’s School (SSM) is an Episcopal, co-educational, college preparatory, independent boarding/day school serving 500 students in grades 6th-postgraduate from 37 states and over 30 countries. SSM is seeking a Mandarin teacher. Candidates must be qualified to teach Mandarin at all levels in a college preparatory environment, willing to work collaboratively with members of the World Language department to encourage development and growth, and willing to teach upper level Mandarin in a blended course environment. Our Mandarin program is small: candidates should be open to teaching upper level Mandarin students in mixed classes (e.g., Mandarin V and IV together) and/or able to teach another language or in another discipline depending on the size of the program and the needs of the school.
Shattuck St. Mary’s School is a boarding/day school and faculty members are expected to be involved with both co-curricular activities and standard residential life duties involved with a residential school setting. In addition, full-time faculty serve as an advisor to a group of students.
Fluency in Mandarin and experience in teaching Mandarin at both the middle and high school levels; however, we will consider strong first-year teaching candidates.
Candidate is willing to think creatively about teaching in a small language program and building program enrollment.
Candidate will be comfortable instructing in an innovative educational environment, familiar with technology in the classroom, and open to blended teaching.
Candidate can demonstrate the importance of cultural competency in teaching and working with students from diverse backgrounds and different countries.
Candidate can demonstrate his or her ability to use varied pedagogical approaches in the teaching of Mandarin.
Candidate is willing to participate in residential life duty, including serving as an adjunct or live-in dorm parent as needed; serve as a student advisor; and lead co-curricular activities.
Bachelor’s Degree; Master’s Degree or additional relevant coursework preferred.
