Birch Wathen Lenox is looking for eligible candidates to teach science in both the Middle School and Upper School beginning the 2018-2019 school year. Science teachers are responsible for the implementation, development, evolution, and progression of the Birch Wathen Lenox K-12 curriculum and the success of its students. Science Department faculty are highly collaborative and focus on using the latest research and technology to bring out the best in our students. We challenge students to problem-solve and strive to provide a positive learning environment in which all students can excel. With a strong focus on inquiry-based learning and scientific writing, the department believes that students learn best through hands- on investigations. A strong candidate should have similar goals to support student development and maintain an abiding passion for their subject.
We are seeking teachers with demonstrated expertise and teaching experience in the two following subject areas:
• Middle School Physical Science and High School Chemistry
• To implement curricula, lesson plans, and activities that meet high academic standards • Design and implement assessments and projects that measure student progress • Use data, professional development, and collaboration to inform instruction • Organize and be active in appropriate field trips and school-wide functions
• Carry out consistent best practices and appropriate classroom management that emphasizes positive reinforcement • Enable students to master material appropriate with and/or beyond grade level • Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues including succinct and clear written correspondence.
• Demonstrate scientific concepts using models, experiments, and utilization of the most current findings and technology to enhance lessons • Curate websites, videos, books, supplies, and other instructional aids to support student learning
• Continue the project-based curriculum that builds fluency and interest in science • Consult with school as a resource in booking guest speakers in STEM fields for our assemblies.
• At least two years of classroom teaching experience. (Teacher certification preferred but not required.) • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in subject taught or related field (with MAs in Education desirable).
• Passion for working with kids, a joy for teaching, and a sense of humor. • Experience and skill in working with a range of student, from high achievers to those with learning differences. • Flexibility, adaptability, patience, and excellent problem-solving skills. We work with adolescents! • Ability and willingness to contribute to school community outside of the classroom as a student club leader (especially in activities related to science such as Robotics and Science Olympiad), athletic coach, or student advisor, etc. • Authorized to work (as well as live) in the United States. • Strong, fluent oral and written communication skills in English. • Professional dress for a traditional school culture.
