The Barstow School is a co-educational school where students in preschool through twelfth grade develop in a challenging educational community. The Barstow school seeks an innovative, passionate, and accomplished educator and musician to oversee our Choral Music Program. In addition to directing the Middle School and Upper School choirs, the Choral Music Teacher will direct the music for a total of three musical theatre productions in Lower School, Middle School and Upper School. Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in a music related field. Experience teaching children and/or adolescents required. Some background in theatre education is preferred.
An ideal candidate will:
Be familiar with an expansive repertoire, which engages a variety of talent at all levels from 1st to 12th grade
have experience teaching 1st to 12th grade
have an understanding of current teaching pedagogies and child development
have knowledge and experience in both choral and instrumental instruction at the secondary level
be able to play the piano
possess flexibility in both implementing best learning practices and pursuing success for each student
possess a high degree of cultural competency and demonstrated experience working with diverse populations
demonstrate fluency with academic technology that advances learning for students and a willingness to integrate technology into classroom experiences
enjoy collaborating with colleagues within and across subject areas
invest in the community and participate in the lives of our students outside of the classroom
practice patience and empathy with adolescents
have excellent communication skills
be self-reflective, able to work independently, and committed to professional growth
have experience in music directing musical theatre plays
be able to teach introductory acting classes
have a willingness and/or experience directing a show choir
